Alright, I did have many, many, many margaritas last night and I am up too early and still drunk but I am going to say it. I don’t want Gary Matthews Jr to leave. Apparently, in the minor league contract that he signed he can opt out of it if the Reds don’t add him to the active roster. He must think that another baseball team is going to put him on their major league roster.
I would love to keep him because you never know when an injury can happen. He would be a nice addition if God forbid that happens to the Reds. A switch hitting outfielder could be a short term remedy in case of emergency.
He has been hitting very well down in Triple A with the Louisville Bats. He is hitting .313 with three homers in 96 at-bats. But unfortunately, Gary Matthews Jr.’s agent told Jayson Stark of ESPN.com that his client will exercise right to opt out of his contract with the Reds on Saturday.
Dusty Baker also weighed in on the situation by hoping he will stay with the organization. In other words, don’t expect the Reds to call him up. “I hope he stays even if it doesn’t fit right now,” said Baker. “You never know if there’s an injury, or what’s going to happen down the stretch. This isn’t only a move for this year for him. It’s a continuing career move for him too, if not here than somewhere else. He hasn’t asked anything of me either.”
So, Gary who I am sure is an avid reader of blogredmachine, please stay. We need you in Louisville right now. But you never know. You could be playing in the postseason if you stay, and maybe win a ring. I know you have let down other teams in the past but we want you to stay.
