Matt Garza pitched three-hit ball for 8 2-3 innings, and the Chicago Cubs sent Zack Greinke to his worst beating in 11/2 years in an 8-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday that prevented a four-game sweep. Helping the Cubs improve to 2-5, Garza (1-0) struck out nine and walked two - both in the first two innings. He induced Cesar Izturis to hit into an inning-ending double play in the second, starting a stretch in which he retired 16 of 17 batters. After Nori Aoki reached on Garza's throwing error with two outs in the ninth, Garza was removed after 119 pitches. Shawn Camp needed just four pitches to end it, retiring pinch-hitter George Kottaras on a game-ending groundout.

  • So, how long does it take to update Garza's pictures with a Cubs uniform? News flash....He's not on the Rays anymore.

Matt Garza, Legitimate Number One Starter

Matt Garza has always had the stuff to be an elite top tier starter, but never quite put it all together until last year. As Dave Allen and Josh Weinstock explained during this past season, a heavier reliance on his secondary pitches was instrumental in his turn around from three consecutive seasons with an FIP between 4.14 and 4.42 to a breakout 2.95 mark last season. I also looked...

Greinke's elevated pitches costly versus Cubs

It all started so well for Zack Greinke in the Milwaukee Brewers' attempt to sweep the Cubs in a four-game series in Chicago. After starting the game with back-to-back perfect innings, Greinke came unraveled in the third, allowing six runs and seven hits as the Cubs went on to win, 8-0.The Brewers, now 4-3 this season, had a chance to sweep the Cubs in a four-game series for...

Line of the Day: Matt Garza

April 12, 2012: Matt Garza of the Chicago Cubs pitched 8 2/3 innings of masterful baseball in leading his team to an 8-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. He struck out nine and allowed just three hits and two walks, retiring 15 of 16 hitters at one point during the game. Line: 8.2 IP | 3 H | 0 ER | 2 BB | 9 K; W (1-0) | QS My fantasy perspective: Garza seems to be performing...

Brewers Blanked by Cubs in Series Finale, 8-0

(Garza Dominated the Brewers in the Series Finale/Getty Images)What started out as a second straight day of a pitchers duel between the Brewers (4-3) and Cubs at Wrigley Field quickly turned into a dominating performance as the Cubs (2-5) took it to Zack Greinke in the 3rd inning in route to an 8-0 win the series finale.  After two innings of shutout baseball things fell apart for...

2012 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Zack Greinke's home/road woes continue

Zack Greinke's ugly home/road splits are back. Greinke frustrated fantasy owners last year when he was so good at home and so bad on the road, and this year has started out the same way. After throwing seven scoreless innings in his first start of the year at home, Greinke gave up eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings at Chicago. The good news is that Greinke's next two starts...

GIFcap: “A comebacker, awesome, totally gonna get this CG SHO … crap.” – Matt Garza

Well on his way to pitching a complete game shutout against the rival Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza only had one out left. Norichika Aoki tapped the ball back to Garza for what looked like an easy play to top off his outstanding performance … then Garza did this. After the play he

What You Need to Know: Friday, April 13 by Daniel Rathman

The Thursday Takeaway Will the real Zack Greinke please stand up? On April 7, in the Brewers’ second game of the season, Greinke dominated the Cardinals over seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and no walks, and striking out seven. Yesterday, facing the Cubs’ decidedly less potent offense, Greinke was torched for eight runs in 3 2/3 innings—including a disastrous...

What Does it Mean?: Melvin & Greinke's Agent Break Off Talks

As reported by multiple sources including Adam McCalvey and Tom Haudricourt the talks between Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin and the agent for Zack Greinke - Casey Close, have been suspended.  According to Haudricourt Melvin stated that "... doesn't mean we won't talk again at some point but we're going to let it rest right now." The immediate reaction...

Garza, Bumgarner wow fantasy owners

On Thursday, I attended the first half of a back-to-back crosstown doubleheader. I joined the masses for Thursday's "getaway day" special between the Cubs and Brewers at Wrigley Field. With free neighborhood parking and a friendly secondary ticket market at play (one popular site had tickets available for 19 cents plus fees), I entered the stadium for less than the...
