Nationals Manager Jim Riggleman announced that right hander Chad Gaudin 27, would start February 28th vs the Mets in St. Lucie, Florida.

Riggleman has recently said that Gaudin would be in the mix for a spot in the Nats starting rotation. Gaudin spent the 2010 season pitching in relief for the Athletics (12 games) and the Yankees (30) games and posted an era of 5.65 on the season.

Personally I would consider Gaudin a long shot at making the rotation. He will be competing for one of five spots and he faces some pretty deep competition with Lannan, Zimmermann, Hernandez, Detwiler, Gorzelanny, Marquis, Maya and Mock.

So right there you have 8 other people competing with not to mention the fact that Chien-Ming Wang is expected to be at full health and ready to start pitching in regular season games some time in late April or May.

So yes he is in the mix to start but it could be a long shot for Gaudin.
