Right-hander Gerrit Cole took a shutout into the seventh inning of his major league debut and hit a two-run single in his first at-bat Tuesday night, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-2 victory. The top pick in the 2011 draft, told PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko that he hopes to be a big contributor for the Pirates in their race in the National League Central division.

First Pitch: Why is Gerrit Cole Throwing So Many Fastballs?

Gerrit Cole has thrown a fastball almost 81% of the time. (Photo Credit: David Hague) In his first two starts, Gerrit Cole has gone heavy on the fastball. Really heavy. As in 80.7% of his pitches have been fastballs. Only one pitcher in all of baseball can top that amount, and that is Bartolo Colon, who is throwing 84.6% fastballs. The first thing I thought about when I saw Cole’s...

Gerrit Cole And The Star Power Of Top Prospects

Highly-touted prospect Gerrit Cole made his major-league debut for the Pirates on Tuesday night.  The 22-year-old right handed pitcher was the first overall pick in the 2011 amateur draft. Heading into this season, Baseball America ranked Cole as No. 7 on the list of top 100 prospects. Even with the Pirates in contention in the National League Central — or perhaps because of it...

Gerrit Cole's second start

One of the most interesting aspects to me of Gerrit Cole being put in the Pirate rotation slightly ahead of schedule is that it's going to force him to grow as a pitcher pretty quickly. I think that he could've pitched for forever in Triple-A the way that he did on Tuesday: hammer the zone with fastballs to get ahead in the count, then use well-placed fastballs and breaking...

Pirates Beat Dodgers 6-3 on Alvarez’s Homer, Cole’s Deja Vu

Do not adjust your computer screen. Gerrit Cole struck out just one hitter but was an out away from his second quality start. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Yes, that was Gerrit Cole making his second Major League start Sunday, even though you could have easily confused it for a replay of his debut. The phenom prospect threw the same number of fastballs, allowed the same number of...

The Friday Infodump

I've been accumulating share-worthy Gerrit Cole links for a couple of days now, so let's get that out of the way along with a few newsworthy stories.  At FanGraphs, Jeff Sullivan took a look at one of Cole's innings and his pitch placement vs. where Russell Martin set up for him. It's interesting, and his point about command vs. control is an important one to...

Pirates 6, Dodgers 3

Rookie Gerrit Cole won again, getting home run help from Pedro Alvarez and pitching the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-3 Sunday. Cole (2-0) allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks in 5 2-3 innings. The top pick from the 2011 draft won in his big league debut last week. Alvarez snapped a 2-all tie when he connected off Zack Greinke (3-2) for a three-run...

Game 69: Pirates 6 Dodgers 3

It's Father's Day and the Pirates are halfway to 82 wins. They got their 41st win today when Zack Greinke left a 3-2 curveball up in the middle of the zone and Pedro Alvarez whacked it out into the bushes in center field, breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth. Gerrit Cole ran into trouble in the sixth and gave the Dodgers a run back, but Alex Presley immediately leveled...

Who Could Start For the Pirates on Saturday?

Could we finally see Andy Oliver on Saturday? Now it’s time for what seems like a weekly feature on the site: “Who could start for the Pirates on (Insert Day) with the recent injury to (Insert Pitcher Who is Injured)”. Today we fill in those blanks with Saturday, and A.J. Burnett. Burnett will miss his next start with a calf injury, causing Jeff Locke to move up a day to...

First Pitch: Five Popular Prospects and When They Might Be Promoted

In the last few weeks the Pittsburgh Pirates have made a lot of prospect promotions. Gerrit Cole was promoted to the majors. Andrew Lambo and Stolmy Pimentel moved up to Triple-A. This week saw Nick Kingham and Gregory Polanco get promotions to Altoona. With half of the minor league season in the books, we should start seeing more and more moves. I get asked “When will Player A...
