With the first overall selection of the 2011 MLB draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates took UCLA pitcher Gerrit Cole.  The Yankees had drafted him at the bottom of the 2008 first round but he refused to sign...some have to wonder what was going through his mind at the time.  It took Cole just 200 minor league innings to make his debut and he looked good both pitching, and swinging the bat!  Pirates 8 Giants 2Cole went 6.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs and struck out 2 in the win. Cole also broke a 0-0 tie with a 2-run single in the 2nd inning. Pedro Alvarez went 3-3 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI. Tim Lincecum suffered the loss, throwing 102 pitches in 4.2 innings as he allowed 4 runs (2 earned).Cardinals 9 Mets 221-year old phenom for the Cards, Michael Wacha earned the first win of his career. Wacha gave up 2 runs in the 1st inning but settled down nicely, going 6 innings, allowing just those 2 runs and struck out 4. Allen Craig put the game out of reach when the Cards led 3-2, he blasted a 3-run home run to make it 6-2. Matt Holliday had 3 hits and scored 3 runs, and Shane Robinson who replaced Craig late in the game, hit a solo home run in the 9th. Jeremy Hefner gave up 6 runs (1 earned) over 6 innings, and the Mets bullpen continues to struggle as they gave up 3 runs over the final 3 innings. Omar Quintanilla hit a solo home run for the Mets.Rays 8 Red Sox 3Roberto Hernandez gave up 3 runs and struck out 7 to lead the Ray to the win. Jon Lester was rocked for 7 runs over 4.2 innings. The Rays hit 4 home runs, Desmond Jennings hit 2, Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce each hit one. Jacoby Ellsbury had 2 hits, 2 runs scored and a stolen base for Boston.Marlins 5 Brewers 4Jacob Turner started for Miami and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) over 7 innings but did not factor in the win. Chad Qualls picked up the win in relief and Steve Cishek earned his 7th save.  Giancarlo Stanton and Derek Dietrich each hit 2-run home runs. Stanton's came in the 8th when the Marlins were trailing 4-3. Jim Henderson was tagged with the loss as he gave up the game winning home run to Stanton.Orioles 3 Angels 2Miguel Gonzalez was great over 8 innings, as he allowed 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 5. Jim Johnson earned his 23rd save. Nick Markakis hit a 2-run single in the 7th inning, breaking a 1-1 tie. Jason Vargas suffered the loss as he allowed 3 runs over 6.2 innings. Mike Trout hit a solo home run and Albert Pujols had an RBI single.Twins 3 Phillies 2P.J. Walters allowed 2 runs (1 earned) over 7.1 innings but did not factor in the win, Brian Duensing who blew the win for Walters picked up the win and Glen Perkins earned his 14th save. Justin Morneau went 3-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI, including the game winning RBI in the bottom of the 8th. Cole Hamels went 6 innings allowing 2 runs but Mike Adams suffered the loss in relief. Mike Young and Ryan Howard each hit RBI singles.Reds 12 Cubs 2Tony Cingrani in his 1st start since being recalled from AAA pitched another good game as he gave up 2 runs over 7 innings and struck out 5. The Reds hit 4 home runs, Xavier Paul hit a 3-run homer, Todd Frazier hit a solo homer, Joey Votto hit a 2-run homer and Zack Cozart hit a 3-run homer. Jay Bruce who did not homer, went 3-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Matt Garza was rocked over 5 innings, allowing 9 hits and 9 runs. Cody Ransom hit a solo home run for the Cubs.Indians 5 Rangers 2Corey Kluber allowed 1 run over 8 innings as he picked up his 4th win of the year. Mark Reynolds, Drew Stubbs (2 RBI), and Nick Swisher all hit RBI singles. Derek Holland gave up 9 hits and 4 runs over 4.1 innings. A.J. Pierzynski hit a solo home run for the Rangers.Tigers 3 Royals 2Max Scherzer improves to 9-0 as he allowed 3 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings as he also struck out 6. Jose Valverde earned his 9th save. Victor Martinez hit a sac fly in the top of the 8th, which broke a 2-2 tie. Omar Infante hit 3 singles. Wade Davis went 6.2 innings for the Royals and allowed 2 runs while striking out 5. Aaron Crow suffered the loss in relief. David Lough hit his first career home run.Blue Jays 7 White Sox 5 (10)Making his Blue Jays debut, Chien-Ming Wang went 7.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and 5 runs, while striking out 3.  Brett Cecil picked up the win in relief and Casey Janssen earned his 13th save. Edwin Encarnacion hit a 2-run home run, and Jose Bautista hit a solo home run in the 9th to tie the game at 5 and send it into extra innings. Rajai Davis scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch, and the Blue Jays added an insurance run on a Munenori Kawasaki double. Davis and Adam Lind each went 3-5 with a run scored. Jose Quintana started for the White Sox and allowed 4 runs (2 earned) in 6.1 innings. Addison Reed blew the save in the 9th and then Ramon Troncoso suffered the loss in the 10th inning. Adam Dunn and Conor Gillaspie each hit home runs for Chicago.Rockies 8 Nationals 3Jhoulys Chacin allowed 2 runs over 5 innings, picking up his 4th win of the year. Tyler Colvin hit 2 home runs, knocking in 4 runs and Carlos Gonzalez added a 3 run home run. Dan Haren suffered the loss, giving up 5 runs over 5 innings. Denard Span drove in 2 with a double, and Ian Desmond added a run on a single. Mariners 4 Astros 0Aaron Harang was nearly perfect as he allowed just 2 singles over 9 innings and struck out 10. Raul Ibanez hit his 13th home run of the season. Endy Chavez doubled twice and scored 2 runs. Bud Norris gave up 3 runs over 7 innings and falls to 5-6 on the year. J.D. Martinez was the only Astros player to reach base as he had both singles off of Harang.Padres 3 Braves 2Andrew Cashner went 8 innings, as he gave up 6 hits and 2 runs while striking out 5, to earn his 5th win of the year. Luke Gregerson earned his 3rd save. Chase Headley hit a solo home run, Nick Hundley had a RBI double and Carlos Quentin had a RBI single. All 3 runs came off of Tim Hudson who suffered the loss after going 7.1 innings. Freddie Freeman had a RBI single in the 1st and grounded into a double play which resulted in a run in the 6th.Athletics 6 Yankees 4Bartolo Colon shut the Yankees out over his 6 innings of work, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 3. Colon is now 8-2 and has won his last 5 starts. Derek Norris homered, doubled and drove in 4 runs. Coco Crisp hit a solo home run. CC Sabathia was rocked over 6 innings, allowing 8 hits and 6 runs. Sabathia is now 6-5 with an ERA above 4. Mark Teixeira had an RBI single in the 8th, and a 2-run single in the 9th.Dodgers 5 Diamondbacks 3Zack Greinke allowed 2 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings but Matt Guerrier picked up the win in relief and Kenley Jansen earned his 3rd save. Andre Ethier hit a 2-run homer to tie the game up in the 6th and Tim Federowicz hit a game winning bases loaded clearing double in the bottom of the 8th. Ian Kennedy allowed 2 runs and struck out 6 over 6.1 but David Hernandez blew the game and was tagged with the loss for Arizona. Jason Kubel hit a 2-run homer and Willie Bloomquist added a RBI single.Also worth noting that the benches emptied twice in this game and Yasiel Puig was ejected.
