The San Francisco Giants placed Chad Gaudin on the 15-day DL yesterday afternoon amidst a flurry of roster moves. The reliever/starter is suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome and has struggled at times since the Giants moved him from the bullpen into the starting rotation.
According to Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News, Gaudin's diagnosis means Barry Zito will be inserted back into the rotation. Zito had been pulled from the rotation after suffering through some horrid outings this year. Zito was even placed on (and cleared) waivers. Zito will get the start against the Boston Red Sox today.
Overall, Gaudin has had a solid season this year. He is 5-2 with a 3.06 ERA. However, in his 12 starts this season, Gaudin has posted a higher ERA. He has been solid as a starter overall, but on occasion he will have his bad game. The Giants still believe he is a better option than someone like Barry Zito, but at this point they have no choice but to pitch Zito.
Guadin is pitching in his 11th Major League season. In his career, he is 45-44 with a 4.44 ERA. He has pitched for nine different teams in his career. Gaudin is in his first year with the Giants. He was signed on a one year deal, so at this point it is still unknown if he will be back with San Francisco next year.
