The San Francisco Giants appear to be setting their main focus on a bigger fish after losing out on the Ricky Nolasco sweepstakes to the rival Dodgers. While the Dodgers are playing good baseball, you can't really say that about the Giants. They have been losing games, batting out of order and battling injuries to pretty much everyone. The Giants after losing out on Ricky Nolasco, have a 'growing' interest in Cubs pitcher Matt Garza, according to John Arguello of Cubs Den. The Cubs appear unlikely to get Giants top pitching prospect Kyle Crick in a potential deal, but Arguello said that the Cubs may be interested in Michael Kickham, Gary Brown and Clayton Blackburn, with neither Kickham or Brown being the centerpieces of the deal. If a deal were to go down between the Cubs and Giants that would send Matt Garza to the Giants, it would take a good package for the Giants to get him. Garza is by far the best pitcher on the open market and he has a chance to be one of the better pitchers in baseball, but he can't stay healthy. On the year, Garza is 4-1 with a 3.45 ERA and a 52/18 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Acquiring Garza would be a good move for the Giants as they need another starter to replace Ryan Vogelsong and potentially Tim Lincecum as he may be moved to the bullpen. This deal may hurt the Giants in the future, but this is the kind of move that could spark the Giants and get them back into contention. Follow @mlbinjurynews Looking for fantasy baseball advice?

Cubs trading Garza or not?

There seems to be some confusion out of Chicago as Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting that the Chicago Cubs are considering keeping Matt Garza. Just yesterday we mentioned how the Washington Nationals were showing interest in Garza, like many other teams. This is pretty hard to believe after six months of non-stop talk of the Cubbies trading Garza at the deadline. In what could...

The Marlins and Minimum Payrolls

Major League Baseball’s attempts to narrow the gap between franchises has resulted in an incentive system. While other leagues have salary caps and floors, Major League Baseball has instituted a system of luxury taxes (to bring down the highest payrolls) and revenue sharing (to bring up the lowest ones). As I noted in a piece for ESPN The Magazine this spring, the system has...
