There’s been talk that the San Francisco Giants should remove struggling right-hander Ryan Vogelsong from the starting rotation. A decision is no longer necessary, as the veteran starter fractured his hand last night during the team’s contest against the Washington Nationals, according to Daniel Brown of The Mercury News. Vogelsong suffered the injury as a batter. He swung at an inside pitch that hit him on his throwing hand, and X-rays later revealed two fractures along his pinkie finger. He also sustained a dislocated knuckle in the same area. Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters that Vogelsong is expected to be sidelined for at least four to six weeks. He’s scheduled to undergo surgery – during which pins are expected to be inserted into his hand – today. The timing couldn’t have been much worse for Vogelsong. After his rough start to the season, he had logged five scoreless innings against the Nationals last night, looking more like the pitcher of 2012 than the one that’s started the new campaign. "It stinks," he said. "Especially because it's been so rough. To get out there and feel like myself again, and to have this happen, it's tough." The Giants are still considering which pitcher will take Vogelsong’s place in the rotation. At this point, it sounds like veteran long reliever Chad Gaudin and Triple-A southpaw Mike Kickham are in the running. The team has an off-day on Thursday, meaning they don’t need a fifth starter until May 28. Follow @mlbinjurynews Looking for fantasy baseball advice?
