The White Sox announced Wednesday afternoon that they’ve placed third baseman Conor Gillaspie on paternity leave and promoted AAA 3B Brent Morel to fill in. Gillaspie can come back off of paternity leave after just one day (Thursday) and can stay on for as many as three days (until Saturday). Though Conor hasn’t been the consistent hitter he was early in the season (his average is down to .246 to go along with his five home runs and 18 RBI), the 25 year-old has still been a great s tory. And as of right now, Brent Morel has his own nice story brewing. We all remember how bad Morel was when given the opportunity to start at third base and hit second in the order at the beginning of 2012, but it’s now known that back injuries were a large reason why he hit as low as .177 with a .225 OBP. So far in 2013, he’s been the AAA Charlotte Knights’ best run producer, as his 40 RBI’s are four more than Josh Phegley’s 36. He’s also hit .280 with five home runs, 19 doubles, and two triples. He even has a pretty nice .373 OBP to balance out for his 69 strike outs in 243 at bats (28.3% K rate). Although his promotion will probably be short-lived, we should watch his performance closely. With Alexei Ramirez assumed to be on the trading block, Morel actually may be the next guy in line to play shortstop within the organization. That’s unless they want to slide over Gordon Beckham or promote youngster Carlos Sanchez. If he is demoted upon Gillaspie’s return, I’d fully expect to see him on the big league club again at some point in 2013. He’s 26 years old, and with a fire sale likely on the horizon, it’s time to determine for good if he’s going to contribute regularly on the south side of Chicago going forward. After hitting .226 in April for the Knights, Morel has posted a .296 average in May and so far a .301 average in June. So, it may be the perfect time to see what he’s got … even if only briefly.
