Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez appeared this morning on ESPN's SportsCenter, where he took questions from Hannah Storm about several topics, including the team's late-season collapse. At one point, Storm made reference to the fact that a handful of Boston pitchers had on occasion enjoyed fried chicken and beer in the clubhouse.
"We just didn't play good baseball," Gonzalez said. "People have to eat, whether it's chicken or [whatever]."
I caught some of Adrian Gonzalez's appearance this morning on "Mike and Mike" and was slightly annoyed with his indifference to the September collapse. I wasn't shocked, after all, this is the same guy who blamed the team's failures on God's will.
The "people have to eat" quote is ridiculous. How, in this digital age, can an athlete be so out of touch with the media and fans?
The fried chicken is a symbol of the team's poor conditioning and work habits, especially among the pitchers. Ignoring that is ignoring the root of the problem.
$154 million can buy you a helluva hitter, just don't expect leadership, too.
