During Wednesday afternoons 14-6 loss to the Atlanta Braves, David Wright collected two hits — a single and a double — in five at-bats while driving in three runs.  With the two hits,  Wright has now reached base at least twice for the ninth straight game (by hit or walk), while the three runs batted in tied him with Darryl Strawberry for the Mets’ all-time RBI record:

David is off to an amazing start to his 2012 campaign; having collected 17 hits in 34 at-bats with two home runs and eight runs batted in.  According to ESPN New York:

It’s a small sample size, but so far, so good. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Wright has chased about one of every 5.5 pitches outside the strike zone — compared to about one in four from 2009-11. He’s seen a total of 40 curveballs, changeups and sliders from right-handed pitchers this season and been very discerning. He has only three misses on his 20 swings against the off-speed stuff. …Of Wright’s first 17 hits this season, seven have been right up the middle. Only 28 of his 99 hits last season fit that description.”

Wright’s terrific start has many wondering if/when the Mets will offer the 29-year-old third baseman a contract extension.  However, according to Andy Martino of the Daily News an extension is not on the “front burner.”  Though when asked, a good team source believes a deal will eventually get done:

While it’s probably a bit early for both sides to be thinking about an extension, or us fans to be talking about it, I sure hope it eventually gets done.  Not just because I am a big David Wright fan, or the fact that my son has named his gold fish after him, but because David is really good at baseball

It’s time to reward David Wright with a contract extension

Usually, teams should take all the necessary precautions when thinking of handing out long-term extensions to players approaching their 30’s. Heck, the Mets heeded that warning, by not showing Jose Reyes any love and letting him walk this past offseason. However, sometimes you have to reward the face of a franchise for being there through thick and thin and in this case; it...

Mets Quotes of the Week: David Wright edition

“That kind of business I leave to Seth and Sam (Levinson, his agents). They can handle it. But I’m going to steer clear. I’m trying to play baseball. Worrying about my contract is too much. It’s hard to prepare for Barry Zito as it is. It’s damn near impossible if I’m thinking about business.”’ -David Wright as reported by Jon Heyman, CBSSports.com “I looked at...

Wright Becomes All Time Mets RBI Leader, But Does That Deserve An Extension?

A team source told Andy Martino of the Daily News that a contract extension for David Wright is not on the “front burner” right now, but added that his gut feeling was that a new contract extension would get done. Today, David Wright eclipsed another franchise record with his three RBI against the Braves this afternoon, tying Darryl Strawberry for the most RBI in Mets history...

Looking At The Numbers For The Mets, Wright And Others

We’re two weeks into the young season and I’d like to share some of my first impressions and hear yours. The Mets, despite losing three of their last four games, are among the early surprises, as are several of their players. They are playing better than anticipated and on pace to win 93 games. I don’t believe they will sustain that, but who wouldn’t take .500 if it were...

Mets Notes: Everything’s All Wright, Nieuwenhuis, Bay and Thole Are Streaking

There is a common thread – a familiar ring – to today’s Mets Game Notes. Let’s see if you can spot it… WRIGHT IN THE RECORD BOOKS: David Wright collected three RBI on Wednesday at Atlanta to give him 733 for his career, equalling the franchise mark set by Darryl Strawberry. Colorado’s Todd Helton is the only other active player who leads his team’s all time RBI list...

David Wright ties Strawberry’s RBI record

David Wright tied Darryl Strawberry’s Mets RBI record, driving in the 733 run of his career. People seem to think that this means nothing at all, that it just means the Mets haven’t had any good hitters. I think it means more than that, and I will write about that later.

The First Trade of the 2012 Denslow Cup Season

This afternoon the Towel and I completed a trade in the Denslow Cup that we had been discussing since last week.  It involved David Wright and Ryan Zimmerman as the centerpieces, and since I had Zimmerman, my side was going to be bigger.  We play in a league that uses both OBP and Slug% as well as the traditional rotisserie categories.  Obviously Wright’s projected numbers...

Upton dead serious about Silly Putty treatment

PHOENIX -- Silly Putty therapy worked for family friend David Wright, so Justin Upton is giving it a try to facilitate his return from a bruised left thumb. Wright, the third baseman for the New York Mets, rolled a blob of the pink stuff between his fingers during pregame work Saturday to gain flexibility in his fractured right pinkie, and something worked -- he played that night...

Some Mets Pre-Game Stuff

Mike Vorkunov of the Star-Ledger spoke to Terry Collins before the game at Citi Field and reports that Andres Torres has made progress in his rehab down in Port St. Lucie. The centerfielder went on the 15-day disabled list two weeks ago with a strained left calf. Collins said three days ago that Torres needs to prove he can sprint at top speed. He has picked up his activity level...

After a disappointing loss in extra innings last night, the Mets and the Giants go at it again for game 2 of their weekend series.  Todays game will be on WPIX at 1:10 PM. Mike Pelfrey (0-0, 3.09 ERA) will face Ryan Vogelsong (0-1, 2.84 ERA) in todays matinee game.  One thing to keep an eye out for in todays game is whether or no David Wright can extend his on base streak to 11...

From Left Field: Getting On Base Is One Thing, Driving Them In Is Another

For those who have read Moneyball, we know now that on-base percentage is the name of the game. In the early going this season, the Mets have done a great job of getting guys on base. The team is tied for third place in the NL with a .335 on-base percentage with the Washington Nationals. However, driving in those runs has been a more difficult task. Just in Wednesday’s game against...
