During Wednesday afternoons 14-6 loss to the Atlanta Braves, David Wright collected two hits — a single and a double — in five at-bats while driving in three runs.  With the two hits,  Wright has now reached base at least twice for the ninth straight game (by hit or walk), while the three runs batted in tied him with Darryl Strawberry for the Mets’ all-time RBI record:

David is off to an amazing start to his 2012 campaign; having collected 17 hits in 34 at-bats with two home runs and eight runs batted in.  According to ESPN New York:

It’s a small sample size, but so far, so good. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Wright has chased about one of every 5.5 pitches outside the strike zone — compared to about one in four from 2009-11. He’s seen a total of 40 curveballs, changeups and sliders from right-handed pitchers this season and been very discerning. He has only three misses on his 20 swings against the off-speed stuff. …Of Wright’s first 17 hits this season, seven have been right up the middle. Only 28 of his 99 hits last season fit that description.”

Wright’s terrific start has many wondering if/when the Mets will offer the 29-year-old third baseman a contract extension.  However, according to Andy Martino of the Daily News an extension is not on the “front burner.”  Though when asked, a good team source believes a deal will eventually get done:

While it’s probably a bit early for both sides to be thinking about an extension, or us fans to be talking about it, I sure hope it eventually gets done.  Not just because I am a big David Wright fan, or the fact that my son has named his gold fish after him, but because David is really good at baseball
