Found May 18, 2012 on North Side Notch:
OF Gorkys Hernandez (#62) has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and RHP Evan Meek has been optioned to Indy. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) May 18, 2012   This a pretty surprising move. We all knew that Meek was most likely going to be sent back down to AAA-Indianapolis for this weekend’s series, but Gorkys Hernandez is not a name that was being thrown around by anyone as a possible call up. Hernandez, 24, is hitting .266/.343/.355 for Indianapolis with two home runs and seven stolen bases in ten attempts. He is widely regarded as the best defensive outfielder, if not player, in the entire organization. This will mark his first ever stint on the Pirates’ ML roster and his first game will be his ML debut. I have had the chance to see Hernandez a few times over the past couple years and have a video recap of him earlier this season here [link].

Pirates Promote Gorkys Hernandez, Demote Evan Meek

I’m just going to come right out and say it.  I love the promotion of Gorkys Hernandez.  He should be given every opportunity to earn a starting role.  I also love Evan Meek being demoted.  Only because he just doesn’t have it. This was the correct move.  In fact this was the only move.  The [...]

Andrew McCutchen blasts Bucs past Tigers

Final: Pirates 4, Tigers 3 WP: A.J. Burnett (2-2, 4.78 ERA) LP: Drew Smyly (1-1, 2.89 ERA) SV: Joel Hanrahan (9, 3.07 ERA) If you hadn’t heard already, Andrew McCutchen likes facing left-handed pitchers. Going into today’s game, he was hitting .314/.390/.539 for his career against southpaws. Well, today he helped out those stats, with not one, but two 2-run home runs off the...

Pirates 4, Tigers 3

Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of two-run homers and A.J. Burnett pitched six solid innings to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. A day after Detroit's Justin Verlander took a no-hitter into the ninth while shutting out the Pirates, McCutchen went deep twice off Tigers rookie Drew Smyly (1-1). It was McCutchen's sixth career multihomer...

Nearly a no-no

Despite their famous streak of futility, the Pirates somehow haven’t been no-hit since Bob Gibson did it in 1971. That’s the second-longest active streak in the league, behind only the Cubs (go figure – not that it means anything). You’d think that with all the terrible lineups they’ve sent out and all the great pitchers they’ve faced, it would happen eventually. They...

Bucs hope Presley regains stroke at Triple A

The Pirates' offense was so anemic Alex Presley, their fifth-best hitter, was demoted to the minor leagues.

Little-known Harrison stays hot while breaking up Verlander's no-hit bid

No member of the Pittsburgh Pirates wanted to be involved with a Justin Verlander no-hitter. But the Detroit Tigers ace had one going heading into the ninth inning against the visiting Pirates on Friday night. With one out in the ninth, unheralded Josh Harrison singled off Verlander to avoid being no-hit. "No one wants to be part of a no-hitter, so it was nice to look...

What You Need to Know: Friday, May 18 by Daniel Rathman

The Thursday Takeaway Pirates starter James McDonald took home his third win of the season last night, but by the time he left the mound, he had been saddled with three runs in 5 2/3 innings—an outcome that belied his dominance of the Nationals in his team’s 5-3 win. The 27-year-old righty cruised through his first five innings, pounding the zone and missing plenty of bats...

GAMEDAY: Presley down, Meek up – Pirates at Nationals
