What we’ve long expected has finally happened: Kevin Gregg is no longer the closer. Last night he blew his third save of the month - and sixth overall - and allowed his twelfth home run. The Cubs have fallen 6 behind the Cards with just over 6 weeks left in the season. Is this move even going to make a difference? Not to let Gregg off the hook, but last night’s loss can also be blamed on the offense, which has reverted back to their April form. There are still individuals who are hitting well - Lee, Fox, Fukudome, and Baker - but as a team they’re struggling. Games like last night are the reasons we hear Jim Hendry talking about needing more clutch hitters. The pitching, outside of the bullpen, has been pretty good almost the entire season. But it’s starting to look like this Cubs team is less than the sum of its parts (as opposed to last year, which felt like the opposite). I’m assuming Lou’s going to use Guzman as the closer now;...
