During the bottom of the 4th inning of the St. Louis Cardinals-Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park on Monday evening, a fan down the right field line armed with an grossly oversized baseball glove ensnared a foul pop-up off the bat of Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes in said ginormous mitt. The best part is how immediately after he catches it, he appears to taunt Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran. Take that, you little-gloved man. There has been much debate and discussion over the years about whether or not a grown adult male human being bringing a baseball glove to a ballgame is a masculine thing to do, but how is that debate affected when the glove in question is comically huge. Does it make it more manly or less manly. More acceptable or more embarrassing? Is a big glove more emasculating of an affront to manhood or does it interject enough whimsy to make it an amusing commentary on the issue? Watch the video for yourself and make your own determination regarding the relative masculinity of shagging fouls with an absurdly huge glove. Via MLB.com: Your browser does not support iframes. Whether or not this settles the debate over whether a grown man should bring a glove to a game or not, one thing is for certain: That is one huge glove and watching the ball get swallowed up in it is an amusing site. According to some chatter on Twitter (via BLS), this big fella is a frequent attendee at Pirates games, and yes, he always comes ready with the monster glove: @corkgaines no problem…he’s caught over 300 balls in PNC since the middle of last year but they never seem to catch him on camera. — Tyler Moorehead (@TMoorehead627) April 16, 2013 Never caught on camera? What is this guy? The Bigfoot of foul fly ball shaggers? As noted elsewhere, how in the world is it possible for that monstrosity — I’m referring to the glove here — not ever be noticed by camera crews? There’s something fishy going on here and I will assure you of this: I am far too lazy to make any efforts in getting to the bottom of it. But look: that glove is huge, man. Huge.
