The February 4th, 2013 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Torii Hunter still feels the Angels misled him, Mike Trout appears in a Super Bowl commercial and much more... The Story: Torii Hunter still seems a bit hurt by the way the Angels handled him this off-season. The Monkey Says: He claims his "mattress" tweet earlier this winter was just a joke but then goes on to say the organization is "A-1" but that he also felt misled. So, he was trying to be funny, but he still kind of meant it, which really makes him a great comedian because anyone will tell you that the best comedy is rooted in honesty. The Story: Mike Trout was part of Subway's Super Bowl commercial. The Monkey Says: That kind of snuck under the radar, didn't it? I suppose this is the start to what should be a long career of bad acting in fast food commercials for Mike. He truly has arrived. The Story: Jered Weaver is considered amongst the most likely to decline in 2013, as is Jason Vargas. The Monkey Says: There are definitely some bad indicators there, but it is improper to bring those up without pointing out how he was limited by a bad back and sore shoulder. Those are red flags too, but they are also issues Jered has worked to address in the off-season, so he could actually buck the decline trend by way of better health. Of course, nobody ever said it was wise to bet on a pitcher in his thirties staying healthy. As for Vargas, the home-road effect is real, but I think the author greatly discounts how much of a pitcher's park the Big A is (it was the fourth most pitcher-friendly park in 2012 according to park factor) and how Vargas has succeeded there in the past. The Story: A look at how the Angels are trying to re-stock their shallow farm system. The Monkey Says: A big understatement in that article is how the Angels are "in some way" seeking out college players. This last draft was almost entirely college kids. It is a strategy I agree with to get the general talent level up in a hurry, but I would be concerned if it was a strategy that they intend to use interminably as it really reduces the chances of landing a high ceiling players. The Story: Mike Trout ranks as the best leadoff man in all of baseball. The Monkey Says: Well, duh. The Story: Prospect Luis Jimenez is enjoying the experience of playing in the Caribbean World Series. The Monkey Says: Lucho performed decently in winter ball, which should hopefully bode well for him in training camp where he is a dark horse to win a bench job on Opening Day or at least do enough to put himself in the picture for a mid-season call-up. The Story: Mike Trout gave some nice advice back to a forlorn teenager who got cut from his high school team. The Monkey Says: Good for Mike for reaching out and good for Mike for composing the very first tweet I have ever seen from him that is longer than five words, although he did continue his habit of ending every tweet with an exclamation point. The Story: Reggie Jackson ranks as the 11th best acquisition in Angels franchise history. The Monkey Says: I'm sure he would've ranked higher if not for that ugly little incident where he tried to assassinate the Queen of England. What a PR nightmare that was! The Story: Mike Scioscia gives an interview about Darin Erstad and the state of college baseball. The Monkey Says: Let me start by saying that I mean this as a total compliment but also a minor concern, but Mike Scioscia's mantra has not changed on bit since he took the job. From a consistency standpoint, that is great for the guys in the clubhouse because they know what is expected of them and how their skipper will react to certain situations. However, he's been preaching the same sermon for so long that you really do have to worry about players tuning him out. [follow]
