Dan Haren took exception to a Chicago Sun-Times report that medical issues led to the Cubs pulling out of a trade that would have sent closer Carlos Marmol to the Angels for Haren last Friday. The Angels subsequently declined Harens 15.5-million option for 2013, buying it out for 3.5 million, and the veteran right-hander who went 12-13 with a 4.33 earned-run average last season is now a free agent. Its definitely a little frustrating to hear, being as Ive started all but three games over a nine-year career, Haren said in an email. I havent heard why exactly they pulled out, but I finished the year healthy and did pretty well down the stretch. Haren, 32, was slowed by lower-back tightness in the first half, compiling a 6-8 record with a 4.86 ERA in 17 starts before going on the disabled list for the first time in his career in early July. But he returned in late July and, despite his fastball dipping to the 89-mph range, Haren went 6-5 with a 3.58 ERA in his final 13 starts. It would be understanable for some teams to shy away from Haren because of his high mileagehe threw 216 innings or more for seven straight seasons from 2005-2011and reduced velocity, but Haren insists he is not a health risk. Ive never missed any time because of injury other than the three weeks this year because of my back, Haren said. When I came back, I had to be cleared by doctors, so obviously, I was healthy. As for any other injury, Ive had very minor issues over the years, but nothing significant at all. My arm is in great shape, and physically, Im in a very good place right now. Im very, very confident that I will return to form next year. -Mike DiGiovanna

How screwed are the Angels if they lose Zack Greinke?

Screwed. Boned. Dead in the water. Up a creek. In deep doo-doo. Totally f#&ked. However you want to phrase it, for the Angels, life without Zack Greinke doesn't look particularly appealing.  They gave away most of the best parts of their farm system to get him and their entire off-season plan is centered entirely around the Halos bringing him back...

And We Have a 2B!

MLBTR reports that the Jays have signed Maicer Izturis (formerly of the Angels) to a 3 year deal worth $10M, with a club option for a 4th year. The reaction in comments I've seen so far seems to be pretty positive about this signing. Just over $3M per year is only a bit more than what the Jays were gonna have to pay Aviles anyways, and Izturis is a pretty similar value to Aviles...

Hunter and Haren, a tour around the majors

As sports fans, it sometimes falls on us to show a modicum of grace in defeat. In most recent Halo history, that defeat is the loss of Dan Haren and Torii Hunter to free agency. It’s easy to whine, place blame, and get angry at the loss of two great players. Rather than take the easy way out, instead we should wish them all of the best and help them make the tough decisions that...

Infielder Maicer Izturis became the first major league free agent this offseason to join a new team, agreeing Thursday to a $10 million, three-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto said the deal was for $3 million annually. The team has a $3 million option for 2016 with a $1 million buyout. The 32-year-old hit .256 with 17 steals in 19 tries, two homers and 20 RBI this...

Is Vernon Wells really that big of a problem?

Vernon Wells is a problem for the Angels.  That isn't up for debate.  He is one of the highest paid players in baseball but performs just above replacement level, and that might be a generous description.  No, the question is just how big of a problem Wells is for the Angels, in practical terms. What we've already heard several times from reporters, columnists and...

Maicer Izturis Finds New Place to be Perfectly Acceptable

Just last season, Maicer Izturis wrapped up a three-year, $10-million contract. On Thursday, Maicer Izturis signed a three-year, $9-million contract. There’s also a fourth-year option — worth $3 million — for one of the very newest Toronto Blue Jays. Maybe that isn’t enough of a hook. Maybe this will make for a better hook. It’s the first multiyear contract that Anthopoulos...
