LAYING IT DOWN: Has Brian Sabean put down his pen in respect to signing free agent Jose Reyes? (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

Those of you who were hoping the Giants would fill their void at shortstop and the leadoff spot in the lineup with one fell swoop of the pen by signing free agent Jose Reyes….. well, it may be time to move on to plan B.

According to the New York Daily News, Giants general manager Brian Sabean (who is in Milwaukee this week for the annual GMs meeting) can be “counted out” as one of the potenital suitors for the 28-year old Reyes, a four-time All-Star who batted .337/.384/.493 (0.877 OPS) with 31 doubles, 16 triples, 7 HR, 44 RBI, 101 runs scored and 39 SB — in just 126 games.

The article also says that Sabean deems Carlos Beltran as “too expensive.” Here’s the actual copy from the post, published earlier this morning:

For those keeping score, count the Giants, Angels, Brewers and Nationals all out. Giants GM Brian Sabean’s priority is to lock up his two-time Cy Young Award-winning ace, Tim Lincecum, to a long-term deal. He is also looking for a power outfield bat to replace Carlos Beltran, whom he deems too expensive.

Assuming the New York Daily News is correct in its assumptions, how would that make you feel, Giants fans? And what exactly is plan B?
