If you're like me, once you finish your fantasy draft, you have a photographer take a picture of you with your team. You pull up your team page on your laptop, and the both of you sit next to a flower bed. The setting is similar to your mother's yearbook picture. The cameraman even uses the filter that blurs out everything around you. As you wait for the makeup person to dab cover-up on your nose pimple, you reach into the flower bed and pull out a hydrangea. Then you speak directly to the SAGNOF Gods and recite his prayer, "He loves me, he loves me Motte, he loves me, he loves me Motte, he loves...." And the last petal ends on "He loves me Motte." And you weep. Motte has an elbow strain and you're stuck with his litigious brother-in-law, Mitchell Boggs. The Cardinals are currently saying all the right things, "Motte will be fine," "Mitchell will temporarily fill-in," "We had no idea McGwire was on steroids." An...

Could Kyle Lohse become the next Jeff Suppan?

Kyle Lohse finally found a team.  After waiting almost to the brink of opening day, Lohse signed with the Milwaukee Brewers for 3 years/$33 million. A bit less than what he and agent Scott Boras were hoping for, but at least they got a deal done. However, when I first heard about the signing, I immediately thought back to the Brewers signing of Jeff Suppan.  In case you forgot...

Jason Motte injury has all signs of long-term problem

In four years Jason Motte went from a hard-throwing catcher to a pitcher who closed out a World Series championship and became a linchpin in the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen but, as is the case for many closers, now it is his turn to land on the disabled list with arm problems. The Cardinals announced Saturday that Motte has a right elbow strain and will likely start the season on...

Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/25/13

Monday marked the St. Louis Cardinals’ fourth of six scheduled camp days this spring. Memphis and Springfield met as did Palm Beach and Peoria on the Cardinals side of the Roger Dean complex. The remaining players in camp formed into two squads for an additional intersquad game. The higher level clubs, Memphis and Palm Beach, were victorious as was Intersquad team 2. The Cardinals’...

Fantasy Take: Kyle Lohse Signing

Kyle Lohse finally signed with a team today, and that means he should be off your fantasy team by this weekend.Look, if he's on your waiver wire, you've got to add him. Unless you found a mega sleeper, he's going to be better than your last-round pick. And if you drafted him in a late round, waiting for the day he would sign, that's a smooth move. But I don't...

Cards find themselves behind the 8-ball heading into the season

As spring training starts to wind down and the 2013 season approaches, the St. Louis Cardinals find themselves a little bit behind the 8-ball.   First, the Cards were hit with the news that ace starter Chris Carpenter’s career might be over after suffering from a nerve compression issue in his right arm that also involved removing a rib. Carpenter thought he had the problem...

Cards’ Freese out, Freeman down, Jackson back

The St. Louis Cardinals placed 3B David Freese on the DL, optioned out LHR Sam Freeman and recalled IF Ryan Jackson.

Cardinals 4, Twins 3

Shelby Miller pitched into the fifth inning, then found out he'd won the fifth spot in the St. Louis rotation as the Cardinals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 Monday. Miller, who had been competing with Joe Kelly for the last spot, gave up one run and six hits in 4 1-3 innings. He struck out two and walked two. Twins starter Mike Pelfrey struck out four, walked one and gave up...

UCB Roundtable: Cardinals' players most likely to see a drop-off in 2013

One of the reasons the game of baseball is so fantastic is because it is the most unpredictable game in the world. Anything can happen at anytime because players can get hot and unfortunately, players can get cold as well. Slumps are a big part of baseball. They can last days. They can last weeks. In some instances, slumps can last an entire season. The performance of any player...

Cards lose lead, fall to Mets

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- After spending almost five years in the U.S. Navy, simply being on the mound at Roger Dean Stadium was exhilarating for St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Mitch Harris -- even if the results were disappointing. Harris gave up a pair of two-run homers and took the loss as a New York Mets split squad beat the Cardinals 10-7 on Sunday. St. Louis played with a short...
