Al Rosen took the Giants to the World Series in 1989.

Former Giants president and general manager Al Rosen will be honored at the 9th annual Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation “Spirit” Gala on Jan. 19, according to a tweet from John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Rosen, who was nicknamed the “Hebrew Hammer” during his playing days with the Cleveland Indians as a slugging third baseman in the 1940s and ’50s, will be awarded the Bud Selig Executive Leadership Award for his work in baseball.

Along with Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax, Rosen is considered one of the best Jewish men to ever play the game. His remarkable story as a Jewish kid dealing with anti-Semitic sentiment in America is featured in the 2010 documentary “Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story.”

Now 87, Rosen took over as GM in San Francisco in 1985 and guided the then-hapless Giants (62-100) to an NL West title in 1987 and a World Series appearance in 1989.

Rosen was in charge when the Giants drafted Matt Williams in ’86 and Royce Clayton in ’88 and brought up a rookie named Will Clark in ’87. He traded Alex Trevino to the Dodgers for Candy Maldonado in 1985. He engineered the trade that brought Kevin Mitchell, Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts over from San Diego in ’87. He traded Mackey Sasser for Don “Caveman” Robinson in 1987 and got Rick “Big Daddy” Reuschel a few weeks later. He was also responsible for signing Atlee Hammaker and Brett Butler as free agents. He got Rod Beck in a trade with the A’s and signed Salomon Torres as an amateur free agent in 1989. He brought in Bud Black, Willie McGee and Dave Righetti in 1990, the same year he traded for Darren Lewis. One of the last moves he made was a trade in December of 1991 in which he sent Kevin Mitchell and Mike Remlinger to the Seattle Mariners for Bill Swift, Dave Burba and Michael Jackson. Rosen resigned his post in Nov. of 1992.

The PBSF is a charitable organization that was established back in 2003 to provide emergency relief and resources —  through the use of grants – to baseball scouts and their families in need. Things like car payments, medical expenses, etc.

The annual gala features a couple of auctions and sponsorship opportunities to further the cause of the Scouts Foundation.

Along with Rosen, other honorees will include: Johnny Bench (Outstanding Achievement), Jim Leyland (Tommy Lasorda Managerial Achievement Award), Dr. Frank Jobe (Dave Winfield Humanitarian Award), Tim Wallach and his sons (The Ray Boone Family Award), Don Pries and Bill Livesey (George Genovese Lifetime Achievement Award in Scouting), and former Giants manager Frank Robinson (Player Lifetime Achievement Award). Masters of ceremonies include actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner, talk show host Larry King and comedian George Lopez. Dinner ticket packages range from $300 to $50,000.

The world stopped on Nov. 1, 2010, right around 8 p.m. West Coast time, if I remember correctly.
