Kyle Kendrick took the mound in Chicago tonight in place of Vance Worley, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list today with elbow soreness. This might sound like a trainwreck waiting to happen, but Kyle pitched surprisingly well considering he started on short notice. The Phillies' offense was downright incredible tonight, including a surprising debut from Hector Luna. Freddy Galvis drove in the first run of the game against Matt Garza in the top of the second. With Carlos Ruiz in scoring position, Freddy doubled him in for his 16th RBI on the season. A huge yet simple error from Juan Pierre would give the Cubs a lead in the fourth. After a 13-pitch at bat from Bryan LaHair, he finally popped up to left field-- only to have Juan Pierre drop the ball. Alfonso Soriano took Kendrick deep to left field afterwards, making it a 2-1 game. 75 pitches from Kyle at this point. In the top of the fifth, Kendrick helped his own case with a single to right field, his first hit of the y...

Defending Kyle Kendrick: Last Night's Winner Has Been Effective Spot Starter

Phillies fans don't like Kyle Kendrick.  In fact, I regularly shake my head at our friend Stephen Gallo's regular anti-Kendrick tweets.    Last night he was positive: Why is it that our friend Steve and so many others have such deep-seated hate for our dear Kyle?  Looking back to 2007 when Kendrick burst onto the scene he has won 10 or more games three times.  He...

Hector Luna's grand slam in the ninth inning put the cherry on top of a fine evening for the Phillies in Chicago.Photo: Getty Images  I tweeted toward the end of the Phillies 9-2 victory in Wrigley Field last night that this was the kind of win where we would wake up the next morning and wonder aloud if the Phillies got their swagger back. For the first time all...

Kendrick continues to show his worth

Kyle Kendrick has certainly had rough spots during his time with the Phillies, but he has also played an important role. In his latest outing, Kendrick came to the rescue when the Phillies needed an emergency starter.

Phillies in Wrigley for quick series with Cubs

Kyle Kendrick, who lost to the Cubs on April 29, will make the start in the opener of the Phillies' two-game series with the Cubs. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso) It's uncharted territory for the Phillies as they head to Chicago. The Phillies are on their first real winning streak of the season. After beating the Astros in dramatic fashion yesterday afternoon, they carry...

With Worley out, Kendrick proves capable yet again for Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies' arrival in Chicago came on the heels of a three-game winning streak, the longest for the underachieving, five-time reigning National League East champs this season. But it also came shortly after the news that right-hander Vance Worley would be scratched Wednesday night in Chicago with a right elbow injury. Although the Phils remain uncertain how...

Record Setting Howard Pace

The 2012 MLB season is nearing the quarter mark with teams about to play their 40th game within the next few days.  There have been 39 Howards committed so far this year.  That's an average of 1 per game, which computes to a pace for 162 Howards.  This would shatter the previous season record of 112 Howards back in 2010.  Keep on hacking, whacking, whiffing, and biffing!Other...

From the Minors to The Moon: Extras Help Phillies to a Win

In a 9-2 win over the Cubs Wednesday night, 6 of those 9 runs were produced by pinch hitters. Many of the “extra” pieces the Phillies picked up over the last few weeks contributed to the win. Even the starting pitcher sort of came “off the bench.” With no warning, Kyle Kendrick was thrust into the starting role when Vance Worley unexpectedly went on the DL with elbow soreness...

Phillies Place Vance Worley On DL, Kendrick To Make Start Tonight

According to MLB's Todd Zolecki, the Phillies have placed RHP Vance Worley (3-2, 3.07 ERA) on the 15-day DL with right elbow inflammation. In Worley's last start, against the Padres on Friday, he tossed six innings allowing 6 hits and three earned runs. Worley took the win in that outing.  In reaction to the move, Kyle Kendrick (0-3, 7.32 ERA) will make the start against...

Kendrick Makes Spot Start Against Cubs For DL-Ridden Worley

Vance Worley (3-2, 3.07 ERA) was scheduled to start the series opener tonight in Chicago against the Cubs, but his elbow felt otherwise. This afternoon, the Phillies placed Worley on the 15-day DL with right elbow sorness. With the Phillies riding a current three-game winning streak, this is not news the Phillies want to hear. Losing Worley in the rotation, just a few starts removed...

Phillies 9, Cubs 2

Carlos Ruiz hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies used Hector Luna's first career grand slam to pull away for a 9-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Kyle Kendrick pitched six sparkling innings in his first start in 12 days as Philadelphia returned to .500 for the first time since it beat Atlanta 4-0 on May 3. He also...

Phillies-Cubs Preview

Because of an injury to Vance Worley, the Philadelphia Phillies' Kyle Kendrick will face the Chicago Cubs' Matt Garza for the second time this season. The first matchup went in favor of Chicago, which isn't surprising considering Garza's success against Philadelphia. Garza has a terrific history against the Phillies heading into Wednesday night's opener of a...
