Davey Johnson told reporters today that Henry Rodriguez would no longer be used in the closer role for the Nationals. According to a report in the Washington Post, Johnson stated that Rodriguez will be used in a less demanding role in the Nationals bullpen.

Look for Johnson to use a closer by committee approach until Drew Storen returns from injury in July, with Tyler Clippard, Sean Burnett and Craig Stammen sharing the closing duties.

Drinking the Washington Nationals Kool-Aid?

"It’s May, you know? We’ll see what happens." (Ian Desmond, via Washington Post, 5/23/2012) Nationals 5, Phillies 2: It's a lovely view from up here in first place. And the Kool-Aid is delicious! So, Tyler Clippard wants Drew Storen's job.

"I want it bad. I’ve been fighting for the opportunity for three years now. I feel like I’ve been over-stepped a few times along the way for the opportunity to get those saves, for whatever reason. I don’t really know. But they have a plan and I trust their plan. We’ve had a good year this year and we’ve been winning. You can’t really go against the grain as...

Committee replaces Rodriguez as Nationals' closer

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson made a tough decision Tuesday when it came to the closer's job. Johnson moved Henry Rodriguez out of the position before the 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The skipper said he'd go with a kind of a committee to hold the job for a while as Rodriguez has been so erratic at times. The Nationals had planned for Rodriguez...

Nationals walking tightrope with Rodriguez closing

Again, the Nationals are being tested without their top two closers. With Drew Storen (bone chip) and Brad Lidge (hernia) on the shelf for at least another few weeks, manager Davey Johnson continues to go with 25-year old Henry Rodriguez. Rodriguez does have a team-leading nine saves, but he also has a recent slump of allowing walk off home runs. That did not occur Monday in...

Burn Notice

"Henry is either lights out or sometimes he's exciting." (Davey Johnson, via MASN/Postgame, 5/21/2012) Nationals 2, Phillies 1: End of the Rod? Gio Gonzalez gave his fellow Nationals starters some kick-ass personalized headphones

Gio Gonzalez is an awesome teammate. Gonzalez tweeted out this pic of the personalized V-Moda headphones he had made for the other four starters that make up the Washington Nationals rotation (Jordan Zimmerman, Ross Detwiler, Edwin Jackson and Stephen Strasburg), and I have to admit they are, as the kids say these days, pretty sick.  Each player’s custom headphones in Nationals...

MusclePharm signs deal with Bryce Harper

Washington Nationals phenom Bryce Harper has signed a sponsorship deal with nutritional supplement company MusclePharm. The 19-year old outfielder is in the middle of his first season in Major League Baseball, having debuted for the Nationals on April 28th. While he has tended to shy away from endorsement deals because he's more focused on baseball itself -- according to his...

Will The Investment In Chien-Ming Wang Be Worth It?

This weekend, Todd Karpovich of announced that upon his return Chien-Ming Wang would be heading to the Washington Nationals' bullpen because Ross Detwiler’s performance has been too strong to remove him. Despite this, Davey Johnson stated, “…But I don’t look at him as a reliever. I look at him as a quality Major League starter.” This decision, although not controversial...

Nationals "World Series Contender" According to Power Rankings

Despite that, the Nats are ranked second in's MLB Power Rankings, and they're the highest ranked team in the NL. But that's not even the exciting news. The folks over at like what they...

Nats avoid another sweep

Nats win a series, blow yet another chance to sweep a series (we've lost count at this point). Braves lose; Nats remain in first place for at least another day. Harper...

Phillies lose second straight to Washington Nationals, 5-2

The at-bat that summed up the season came in the bottom of the third, after Shane Victorino hit a one-out double to put runners on second and third with the Phillies trailing by three runs. Last year, that would have meant Ryan Howard batting cleanup with Hunter Pence on deck, perhaps followed by Raul Ibanez. Last night, it was back-up catcher Brian Schneider and journeyman Hector...
