Found April 25, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
For those of you that missed it, there was a strange play that took place during the Detroit Tigers’ 7-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Quite frankly, I’ve never seen anything like it before. Here’s what happened along with the accompanying video from MLB.com. During the third inning with the Tigers trailing 4-2 and base runners Prince Fielder on third and Victor Martinez at second, Jhonny Peralta lined a single to right field to score Prince Fielder. It should have ended there, but Martinez rounded third and started chugging to third, opting to test the powerful arm of Jeff Francoeur. The former Met fired a bullet to home that essentially made Martinez a dead duck. But instead of trying to barrel over Royals catcher Salvador Perez who had the plate blocked and was waiting for the slow-footed Tigers DH to make contact. Only a few feet from home plate, Martinez suddenly decides to make a hard right turn and proceeds to head to the dugout. The home plate umpire ru...

Blister shouldn't hinder Verlander for long

DETROIT -- There was a silver lining to Detroit's rainy, extra-inning loss Thursday afternoon -- Justin Verlander is fine. Tigers fans had to be worried when Verlander left the game after seven innings with a blister on his pitching thumb, but both he and Jim Leyland were relatively unconcerned. "I started noticing it at the end of my last start, and it started to get...

Valverde gets save in 2013 debut

DETROIT A skip, a spit and once again, it was Potato Time. As unthinkable as it might have seemed in late October, Jose Valverde was indeed coming through that Comerica Park bullpen door. Most of the fans rose to their feet and cheered Detroit's prodigal son, and while a few booed, everyone was on the edge of their seats as Valverde prepared to save his first game since Oct...

Tigers go back to Pappa

After the Tigers were swept out of the World Series last October, I believed that Kwame Kilpatrick had a better chance of making a comeback than Jose Valverde. It was difficult to watch Papa Grandes playoff meltdown, especially the snapshot of him in the dugout searching for answers as tears welled up in his eyes. Once the season ended, the Tigers let it be known that Valverde...

Sanchez sets Tigers strikeout record in win

DETROIT (AP) -- Anibal Sanchez struck out 17 in eight marvelous innings for Detroit, confounding the Atlanta Braves in a dazzling performance Friday night and leading the Tigers to a 10-0 victory. Sanchez set a team record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game, and he had a mathematical chance of tying the major league mark of 20 when he was pulled after eight innings and 121 pitches...

TDSS Tigers Game Recap, Game 19: Jose Valverde Slams the Door in His Return

Jose Valverde, sporting a half-dyed goatee and a full windup pitching motion, tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his first Tigers appearance of the year, closing out a 7-5 Detroit win over Kansas City. Less than a month after the Tigers signed Valverde to a minor-league contract, he was back in the Comerica Park bullpen and at he end of the Tigers’ bullpen. Valverde was the third of...

Jose Valverde returns, gets 1-2-3 save

It was pretty clear that Jose Valverde was on the fast track to the Tigers' bullpen once he was signed to a minor league deal earlier this month. When Octavio Dotel got officially shelved on the DL yesterday with a bum elbow, Valverde's ticket back to the bigs came even sooner.  Back as the team's closer, Valverde got a chance to redeem himself from a horrid playoffs...

Sanchez K's 17, Tigers blank Braves

Miami Marlins Claim Pitcher Duane Below From the Detroit Tigers

MLB News: The Miami Marlins claimed left handed pitcher Duane Below off of waivers from the Detroit Tigers. They have decided to option him to Triple-A New Orleans. Below had bounced back and forth from the minors to the majors the past couple of years for Detroit. Fantasy Ramifications: Below holds no fantasy baseball value. The post Miami Marlins Claim Pitcher Duane Below From...

Anibal Sanchez Channels Inner Bugs Bunny, Strikes Out 17 Braves

Detroit Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who approached twenty strikeouts, was convincingly dominant tonight while making the Atlanta Braves look like the Gashouse Gorillas of the old Bugs Bunny cartoon.  Sanchez, who couldn’t be happier he’s out of Miami, managed to strike out 17 Atlanta Braves hitters in eight innings of work this evening.  Only 18 pitchers have struck out...

GIF: All 17 strikeouts for Anibal Sanchez vs Atlanta Braves

Tweet   The Detroit Tigers defeated the Atlanta Braves 10-0 Friday night. Torii Hunter and Victor Martinez each had three hits. Miguel Cabrera, Jhonny Peralta, and Matt Tuiasosopo had two apiece. Tuiasosopo also drove in five runs. But the story of the game was Tigers starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who set a franchise record for [...]

Dugout Digest - the whiff king

Anibal Sanchez set the Tigers franchise record for strikeouts in a game on Friday night, fanning 17 Braves and getting 28 whiffs on the evening (good for a 23.1% whiff rate). Considering that Detroit currently features strikeout artists like Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and Mickey Lolich, that somehow makes Sanchez's accomplishment that much more awesome in context. PIC...

The Detroit Tigers welcomed back Jose Valverde Tuesday, six months after the team bid farewell to the closer, signing him to a one-year Major League Baseball deal. Valverde will be the Tigers closer if the they take a lead
