Found February 27, 2012 on Mets Merized Online:
Jeff Wilpon handed out orange T-shirts that he had printed with the Underdog logo on them for the players to wear during Spring Training. “I thought Jeff had a great idea”, Collins said. David Wright wasn’t to keen on them. “I don’t really like using the whole underdog thing,” he said. “I don’t like really playing that card. I think it’s just a way to remind everybody in here that the outside expectations aren’t the expectations that we have for ourselves. And I think Terry did a good job of kind of conveying it today, because obviously the expectations from the outside are low, and understandably so.” Wright refers to Collins’ message to the team this morning in which he said, “There’s 29 teams who think they’re better than the Mets. You know what? If it ticks you off, then we’re doing our job. You’ve got to know how you’re being felt out there.” Well, at least I now have a better understanding of what Jeff Wilpon does around here.

Mets get ‘Underdog’ t-shirts courtesy of Jeff Wilpon (Picture)

If there’s any team in baseball that fits the underdog description, it is without question a franchise playing in the country’s largest media market. Yup, the New York Mets are easily one of the biggest underdog franchises in sports. Well, at least that’s what out-of-touch COO Jeff Wilpon believes. Wilpon, already known as a feisty character, had t-shirts with the U logo...

Mets' COO Jeff Wilpon Buys Players Underdog-Themed Shirts, Irks David Wright (Photo)

The New York Mets missed the playoffs for the 5th straight season in 2011. Their string of collapses and disappointments has become a running joke in professional baseball, and now it seems the Mets are getting in on it too. Jeff Wilpon, Chief Operating Officer for the team and son of owner Fred Wilpon, tried rallying his players with a little gift placed in their lockers on Monday...

Mets Players Are Issued Underdog T-Shirts

"We Don't Rebuild We Reload".."Go Hard Or Go Home"..Those are slogans on t-shirts that we wore for my high school baseball team.  But this isn't high school, is it?  Its also not a Friday night beer league or a movie.  This is professional baseball and its about time the Mets organization, from head to toe, starts acting like it!These shirts were issued...

Have The Nationals Set The Market Price For David Wright?

Any Met fan upset about the manner in which Jose Reyes departed Queens last season and fears that the same fate lies ahead for David Wright will not be happy to learn that the Nationals have just dealt out a massive contract to their own third baseman, Ryan Zimmerman.Zimmerman's deal guarantees six years at $126 million with a club option for a seventh season, which would bring...

Wilpons are Sticking Around, Annoying the Mets Players

Mets fans don't have much to cheer about these days—unless you count the fact that Lucas Duda MIGHT someday be a league average hitter...—particularly after team owner Fred Wilpon had this choice quote for the fans of his moribund franchise:"[The fans] shouldn't be concerned about us owning the franchise, because we intend to own the franchise for a very long time...

David Wright in a Michigan football jersey? David Wright in a Michigan football jersey.

New York Mets third baseman David Wright lost a friendly bet with the Mets COO Jeff Wilpon a few month ago over the 2012 Sugar Bowl, which saw Virginia Tech (which Wright's brothers attended) face Michigan (the alma mater of Wilpon's father and Mets owner, Fred Wilpon). As you probably know by now, the Wolverines went on to beat the Hokies 23-20, and on Monday, Wright...

Player Profile #20: David Wright | 3B | NYM

Ever since the Mets moved into Citi Field, David Wright hasn’t quite been the same hitter. His strikeout rate rose from 16.4 percent at Shea Stadium to 22.9 percent at Citi Field. His power also suffered to the point where Wright had two seasons well below a .220 ISO (.140, .172) when his lowest ISO in five years at Shea was .217. The Mets are bringing the walls in a couple feet...

Wright Is A Fantasy Bust, Duda Is A Fantasy Sleeper

CBS Sports’ Eye on Baseball posted a Mets Spring Primer which included their fantasy sleeper and bust, as well as the Mets outlook this season from opposite sides of the spectrum. Also check out their complete Mets Fantasy Preview. Fantasy sleeper: Lucas Duda “From July 15 (about the time he took over for a departed Carlos Beltran) to the end of the season, Duda hit .322 with...

Even the Charming Fred Wilpon Can’t Sell This Tired & Weary Fan Base

Give Fred Wilpon credit, he really does try to sell his team. The problem is he’s run out of sell stories that even the most loyal of Mets fans could justify. That should scare him even if in the unlikely event he survives his personal financial crisis and keeps his beloved franchise. The beat reporters tried to press Wilpon about the team’s ownership woes yesterday. Fred is...

All About The U

I'm hearing that Bill Giles has bought the Phillies t-shirts with Simon Bar Sinister on them.So Jeff Wilpon bought the Mets t-shirts with the Underdog "U" on them to remind them that they're ... duh, underdogs as if it hadn't been beaten into all of their heads already all damn winter. I bet he had to explain the reference to all of them since the show went...

Wright: Underdog strikes out

Can even Underdog save the Mets? David Wright seems to have his doubts. COO Jeff Wilpon on Monday presented each member of the team with an orange T-shirt depicting the “U” symbol from the 1960’s TV cartoon “Underdog.” While most Mets, including manager Terry Collins, appeared to enjoy the stunt, Wright wasn’t thrilled.

After losing bet, Wright forced to rep Michigan

The way David Wright jokingly tells it, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon coerced him into accepting an unfair bet last month, when his favored Virginia Tech Hokies played Michigan in the Sugar Bowl. As a result, Wright wore a Michigan jersey during workouts Monday.
