(Stephen Strasburg's #37 was retired by SDSU on Friday night. Photo via @AmandaJoy2117) So Stephen Strasburg had his jersey number (37, of course!) retired by San Diego State on Friday night before the baseball team's season opener against Washington. There's Baseball Jesus himself, above, accepting the honor. Apparently Stras threw out the first pitch, too, to someone who wasn't wearing catcher's gear. This Tweet pretty much captures the spirit of the moment: See you in Viera, Stras.

How Danny Espinosa has been preparing for the 2012 season...

In case you were wondering about Danny Espinosa's offseason training regimen, proceed to the video below in which Danny works on his core by doing exercises with ropes and weights and stuff at Starting Line Fitness in California. "I needed something more explosive," explains the guy who could've been NL ROY if not for his 2nd half disappearing act. Let's...

Sounds like the Nationals are serious about this Take Back the Park thing...

Jayson Werth arrived early to Spring Training with the Nationals on Saturday (like, really early), and made it clear he wants to put his 2011 disaster behind him: doesn't want to dwell on it, but feels more at home now.  His comments got us thinking about home cooking, and the Nationals' Take Back the Park  campaign. Here's Werth's comments on how important he...

Bryce Harper bought his Mama a house tonight. No big deal.

And so, Bryce Harper has provided a lifetime's worth of sometimes intriguing, magical, confusing, maddening, and funny, etc. etc. content on Twitter this offseason. No doubt the Washington Nationals PR staff has no idea what to do with the kid, short of taking away the keys to his Twitter account. Seems like no matter what he says, there's an immediate reaction, most notably...

Is Edwin Jackson "Clutch" ?

In a must-read blog post, the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore spoke with Nationals pitching coach Steve McCatty about his plans for spring training as well as his specific interactions with different Nats starters over the winter. One of the most promising tid-bits that McCatty shared is that they may have pinpointed something in newly acquired starter Edwin Jackson's wind...

Topps Fulfilled My Danny Espinosa RC Auto Redemption Super Duper Fast.

A short while back I acquired a Danny Espinosa 2011 Topps Chrome RC Auto redemption from Robert over at $30 a week habit in what was our eleventy-billionth trade. I quickly redeemed the Espinosa, and Topps informed me the card was scheduled to ship in May. I had no problem waiting, and wasn't at all concerned that this redemption story would turn out like others we've all...

Desmond confident in leadoff abilities

Nationals manager Davey Johnson has often said he is confident that shortstop Ian Desmond can be his leadoff hitter in 2012. It helped that Desmond hit .289 with a .338 on-base percentage after the All-Star break last year.

Jayson Werth turning the page on 2011

VIERA, Fla. — Jayson Werth arrived in Viera, Fla., on Friday night and by early Saturday afternoon he was inside the clubhouse at Space Coast Stadium, getting himself together to go take batting practice with second baseman Danny Espinosa. But before he took his first in-town hacks of the spring, ...

Strasburg eager to earn keep on Nats' staff

Nats right-hander Stephen Strasburg arrived at Space Coast Stadium on Sunday and said that he doesn't want to be given any special treatment. He wants to be the guy the team can rely on every fifth day.

Jackson excited to be a part of Nats' staff

Right-hander Edwin Jackson thought he was going to be a member of the Nationals in 2010. In fact, as a member of the D-backs, he thought he would be part of a three-team trade which involved the Nationals, White Sox and D-backs. But Washington's part in the trade never materialized.

Strasburg anticipates season free of doubts

VIERA, Fla. — His first year, Stephen Strasburg was the phenom. The guy with the golden arm. The biggest question was whether the Nationals would allow their prized pitcher to skip the minor leagues. The second year, he was a spectator. The road back from Tommy John ligament reconstruction surgery ...

Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth was not expected to be in Spring Training until next week, but his first day in camp turned out to be Saturday. He went right to work, going to the complex and taking batting practice with teammate Danny Espinosa.

As winter turns to spring, Nationals baseball begins anew in Florida

If there was ever a winter to truly be had in the mid-Atlantic this offseason, it'll come to an end Sunday for Washington Nationals fans when the team's pitchers and catchers report to Viera, Fla. So as nameplates are being hung over the lockers at Space Coast Stadium with care, ...
