TEAMS: Atlanta Braves, New York Mets
The top story for the Mets continues to be Michael Bourn – will he sign or won’t he? Will MLB protect the pick or won’t they. There are good arguments to be made on both sides, but the bottom line is that ultimately Bourn will go wherever he wants to play, be it the Mets, the Indians or any other team that may be in the mix. Sometimes players want to play in a particular region of the country and it isn’t always about the money.
One thing that has become clear to me is that if Bourn does sign with the Mets the front office will be overpaying him to sign on the dotted line. It’s a risk the team is willing to take given the sad state of affairs in the current outfield and the fact that the minors holds little promise to remedy the situation in the next two years. It may have been prudent to have taken a more aggressive approach to the outfield dilemma as soon as the offseason began rather than waiting so long to make a move or show any interest in fixing the situation. But that’s all ...

Latest On Bourn: Independent Arbiter Will Decide If Mets Pick Is Protected
According to Andy Martino of the Daily News, while the Mets remain very motivated to sign free-agent center fielder Michael Bourn, they won’t make a deal if it will cost them their first round draft pick.
It turns out that the decision about the draft pick would be in hands of an independent arbitrator, not the commissioner’s office. Here is how the process could work:
The...
Report: Michael Bourn Having ‘Ongoing Discussions’ With Mets
Spring training is right around the corner and, shockingly, free agent Michael Bourn still hasn’t signed on with a new club.
The latest team to show interest in the speedy outfielder is the New York Mets, according to The Star-Ledger. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said there is “ongoing discussion” with Bourn.
Since Bourn’s former team, the Atlanta Braves, sent Bourn...
Why Bourn, If Not Reyes?
As the possibility of Michael Bourn landing in Queens seems more and more like a reality, there are a faction of fans who feel Bourn wouldn’t be such a necessity, had the Mets simply resigned Jose Reyes. On the surface, they’re correct, however as is the case with everything New York Mets, there is always more to it. Its easy to compare the two players. Both center their...
Mets Expecting Johan Santana to Hurl Opener
Last year at this time, the Mets were hopeful that Johan Santana would be
able to make it back from shoulder surgery, which had cost him his entire 2011
season. A surprisingly strong spring meant that not only had he made the
starting staff, Santana was on the mound for the Mets season opener versus Atlanta, hurling five
shutout innings. This season, with 2012 Cy Young...
The Bourn Idiocy
Not to be a party pooper, because I know how some people love drama ... and perhaps some of you who read this nonsense like drama ... but can we figure out if the 11th pick is going to be protected or not already? We're starting to get to that area of this story where I just don't care anymore. It's kinda like that area of time right after the Manti Te'o story was...
Do the Mets players need the boost of sign Bourn
I think Michael Bourn is a perfect fit for the Mets, he would be a true lead-off hitter, a base stealing threat and a defensively skilled center fielder. All are areas of the current roster that the Mets have glaring holes. Bourn just turned 30 y/o at the end of December which means he would be 33 y/o at the end of a 4 year contact. Ever since the Mets made their case against...
When will Bourn find a new team?
No free-agent position player of Michael Bourn's caliber has ever taken this long to find a new team. Not when fully healthy. Not in a true open market.
In 2007, outfielder Magglio Ordonez needed until Feb. 7 to sign with the Detroit Tigers, but only because the two sides had to work out complex language due to a pre-existing condition in Ordonez's left knee.
In 1987, victims...
Wright Reaches Out To Michael Bourn, Things Could Be Heating Up
David Wright told The NY Post yesterday, that he has spoken with and exchanged texts with free-agent center fielder Michael Bourn in an attempt to lure him to Citi Field. “I just wanted to let him know that he would be a great addition here and he’d obviously be welcomed here,’’ Wright said after his first early workout at the Mets’ spring training complex. “I talked...
Mets Rumors: Mets and Scott Boras are playing a game of chicken for Bourn
According to Joel Sherman of the Ny Post, The Mets and Scott Boras are engaged in a game of chicken.
The powerful
agent is saying he has attractive offers elsewhere for Michael Bourn.
The Mets are essentially challenging him to prove those offers exist by
remaining relatively inflexible in what they are willing to spend on the
fleet center fielder.
Bourn does not have an...
How Can We Predict Stolen Base Talent?
Predicting the ability to steal bases is not something you think you need to do. You did not say to yourself over breakfast, “I wonder if Michael Bourn can steal bases?” You already knew he could. And maybe that’s what made breakfast so delicious.
But if we want to push the frontier of base running, if we want to see the end of the home run era become the beginning of the efficient...
Team Source Says Bourn Could Get $14-15M In Average Annual Salary
Here are two significant updates from Jim Bowden of ESPN XM Radio:
“With Victorino getting an average annual salary of $13 million,” Bowden says. “And with Bourn turning down a qualifying offer of $13 million, it only makes sense that he would get north of that.”
A team source (presumably the Mets) also told Bowden that if the Mets were able to sign Michael Bourn, negotiations...
Indians One Of Many Teams That Will Consider Bourn If Price Drops
The Indians might be one of many teams that will be interested in signing free agent Michael Bourn if his price comes down according to Buster Olney of ESPN.
As I wrote last week, I was afraid this would happen the longer this dragged out. Scott Boras isn’t concerned with making friends, only getting his clients the largest deals they can get. He always keeps busy working the...
Bourn will dictate shape of Mets outfield and bench
By Dave Mills
The New York Mets signed two more outfielders today, but neither was named Michael Bourn and neither is likely to have an impact on the major league roster.

Mets News and Notes: Wheeler, Collins, Lutz, Gee, Tradition
Mets News and Notes:
Zack Wheeler hopes to learn from Matt Harvey this spring.
“We talked a little bit this offseason,” Wheeler said. “I asked him to help me out this spring. He was more than willing to just let me tag along and show me the ropes a little bit, because he was sort of in the same situation last year that I am this year.
“It’s baseball,” Wheeler continued...
