It's a 2-1/2 inch by 1-1/2 inch 102 year old piece of cardboard. It was originally released in cigarette packs sold by the American Tobacco Co. from 1909 to 1911. It's the Honus Wagner card - the most worthy trading card of all-time.
He played most of his 21-year career for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won eight batting titles and finished his career with a .327 batting average. Historians believe that there are about 60 of these 1909 cards still in circulation with many of them in poor condition.

Bill Goodwin, a St. Louis-based collector, is set to put his 1909 Honus Wagner card up for auction Tuesday. According to a rating system by Sportscard Guarantee Corp., the quality of Goodwin's card is better than all but five Wagner cards in existence.

Goodwin expects the card to fetch at least $1 million, and perhaps as much as $1.5 million, in the online auction.

So what makes the card so darn expensive? It was pulled from circulation after about 200 were issued. According to NBC Sports, "the consensus was that Wagner didn't want to encourage smoking, especially to children. Goodwin noted, though, that Wagner was photographed with chewing tobacco in his mouth and did advertisements for tobacco companies."

$1.5 million because only 200 were made and Wagner didn't want to encourage smoking? So say Tigers second baseman Ryan Raburn doesn't encourage smoking and 10,000 copies of his 2008 Topps card were produced. Would that make them worth $30,000 a piece? No you say? Please explain.
