Found December 09, 2011 on U.S.S. Mariner:
I’m a bit sleep deprived after a long week in Dallas, but I wanted to make one quick point before heading to bed. I know that the Angels decision to spend big on Pujols and Wilson has caused a lot of people to turn their attention back to the size of the Mariners payroll, and calls are getting louder for the team to spend more money in order to compete in the AL West. I’m not against the team spending more money, but I do believe that we need to understand the actual causation that drives the correlation between a team’s payroll and their record. It’s easy enough to look at a chart that includes total payroll and total wins and see that there’s a relationship. Teams that spend more generally win more – not always, but usually. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why this is. However, that’s a correlation. That the two things are related does not mean that increasing payroll will increase your win total to the degr...

Mariners Add One, Lose One in Rule 5 Draft

The Mariners have had a history with the Rule 5 Draft in recent years. Going back from last year to 2001, we've picked RHP Jose Flores, RHP Kanekoa Texeira, IF Reegie Corona and LHP Jose Lugo (the double dip of '08), RHP R.A. Dickey, RHP Sean White, LHP Luis Gonzalez, and The Rule 5 Kid himself, IF Luis Ugueto. We keep coming back to it even though it's something that...

Pujols…hmph! Relax Mariners fans, good days are ahead…

Insider Steve says so what if the Anaheim Angels signed Albert Pujols. The Seattle Mariners need to tune out the gallery and keep with the current plan in place, and not over react to what other teams are doing. It's a matter of trusting Jack Zduriencik and his model of operation. The Mariners are the Texas Rangers, just three seasons behind.

Dustin Ackley Player Projection No. 123

Key Stats: After being closer to ordinary in 2010 at Triple-A Tacoma, Ackley took the next step forward in just over two months with Tacoma last year raising his OBP by 83 points over his 2010 cup of coffee in Triple-A. Bad team or not, Ackley deserved to play at the Major League level and held his own in year one. Ackley had a .348 OBP and should only get better as he learns MLB...

Just Do It, Jack!

The two biggest obstacles in front of the Mariners' hopes of contention both got massively huge TV contracts, affording them some room to add massive salaries when needed. Anaheim has started spending that cash, and Texas will too.Not only was the Pujols signing a massive shot across the bow of the good ship Mariner (subtle entendre intended ;-) it was also simultaneously a...

The Los Angeles Dodgers sign Josh Bard

The Dodgers have signed 33-year old switch-hitting catcher Josh Bard to a 1-year deal. Bard played in 26 games for the Mariners last year and he was 17 for 81 (.210 avg, .589 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 2 homers and 11 RBIs. Bard has now played in 586 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 452 of 1,778 (.254 avg, .705 OPS) with 162 runs scored, 39 homers, 220 RBIs and...

Mariners are doing a lot of talking, but no offers made yet

The Mariners have not made an offer to slugger Prince Fielder yet and it's unclear who their competition for Fielder might be.
