Phillies Sign a Catcher
Just before the news of Carlos Ruiz‘s 25-game suspension broke, Jim Salisbury Tweeted the Minor League signing of 33-year old Venezuelan catcher Humberto Quintero. Quintero will likely compete for an Opening Day roster spot with fellow catchers Steven Lerud, who cleared waivers earlier this offseason, and Sebastian Valle, who, as a member of the 40-man roster, has a minor but real outside chance of making the roster out of camp. Quintero is a ten-year Major League veteran with a .234/.267/.323 triple-slash line and 16 career home runs. This signing won’t let the world on fire but Quintero has a reputation for calling good games behind the plate and he’s likely better than Lerud and it appears as Valle would need some more seasoning before hitting the Big Leagues.
Phillies Bring Back Orr
In a second Tweet, Salisbury broke the news that the Phillies have re-signed infielder Pete Orr to a Minor League deal. Orr hit .315/.327/.444 in 57 PA in 2012 for the Ph...

Ruiz set career-highs in 2012 in eight offensive categories. Did Adderall aid that?
According to tweets from both Matt Gelb and Todd Zolecki, Carlos Ruiz has been suspended 25 games for the use of amphetamines, specifically Adderall.
In his story, Gelb says “the suspension was triggered by Ruiz’s second positive test for the stimulant.” The Phillies will be without him until...
The pursuit of talent for the Philadelphia Phillies is a 8th-inning set-up man, and a center fielder in that exact order, while it simultaneously presents Darin Ruf with a leftfield shot. Why is the brain trust concentrating on the 2nd choice first?

TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW
The Phillies catcher is coming off a career year, but the team is going to be without his services for the first 25 games of next season after he was busted for amphetamines.
Yesterday, we brought you the news of the Astros potentially trading closer Wilton Lopez to the Phillies. Well, today it appears that the trade will not be happening after Lopez's physical with the Phillies hadn't gone well. Reportedly, Lopez's elbow is what gave Philadelphia's doctors pause.
The Phillies were reportedly going to send pitcher Tyler Cloyd and catcher...
Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was suspended Tuesday for the first 25 games of next season after a positive test for an amphetamine.
The 33-year-old was an All-Star for the first time this year when he hit .325 with 16 homers and 68 RBIs.
According to a Philadelphia Inquirer report, Ruiz tested positive for Adderall, an amphetamine commonly used to control attention...
One prominent agent said the Philadelphia Phillies could “surprise
everyone” and sign free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton this offseason, reports
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.
"Watch out for #phillies to surprise everyone and sign Hamilton,'' said one prominent agent. A scout told me the same thing.

On this day in 1978 one of the top players in Philadelphia Phillies history, Jimmy Rollins, was born.
The three-year All-Star, four-time Gold Glover and one-time MVP is arguably the best shortstop in Phillies history and he without a doubt played a huge role in developing a winning attitude in Philadelphia, where it was long thought to be nearly impossible. Rollins will one day...
Major League Baseball announced that Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz has been suspended 25 games for testing positive for amphetamines. Some reports have surfaced that the substance Ruiz took was Adderall which is commonly used by students and athletes to stay up, focus and have more energy and can be given as a prescription by a doctor(which is not what happened in this case).
The Philadelphia Phillies will have to begin their 2013 campaign without All-Star Carlos Ruiz behind the plate. Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that it had suspended the catcher for 25 games for using the banned amphetamine Adderall.
Ruiz released the following statement:
“I am sincerely regretful for my mistake in taking a prohibited stimulant,” Ruiz said in a release...

The Phillies are in serious talks with the Houston Astros and may be on the verge of trading for 29-year-old righthanded reliever Wilton Lopez, reports Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com.
If the Phils pull this off, it would be a great, under-the-radar trade. Many baseball fans haven’t heard of Lopez because he’s been trapped under the weight of the 100-loss Astros, but he’s actually...
It has just been announced that Phils’ catcher Carlos Ruiz has been tested positive for using Adderall, an amphetamine commonly used to help control attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as it help the user stay focus. This is not a steroid, but it’s use is banned by MLB. This is the second time that he has tested positive for using the stimulant, which will not lead...
Carlos Ruiz, who was the lone steadying influence on the Phillies last season, has tested positive for Adderall. The result is a 25-game suspension to start the 2013 season.
ESPN reported earlier today that Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz has been banned for the first 25 games of the 2013 season after testing positive for Amphetamine. Amphetamine is one of the many performance enhancers on Major League Baseball’s banned substance list. Ruiz had a big season production-wise, hitting .325, with 16 home runs and 68 runs…
The agreed-to-but-not-final Wilton Lopez deal that may fall through gives us a little insight as to what the Phillies are thinking. They want a reliever who can be strong in the 8th inning. They want someone young, inexpensive, and who will be around a while. That player could come from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Jordan Walden, suggests Marcus Morris of Pucktacular...
