Found September 25, 2012 on WHYGAVS?:
While I started gathering thoughts for my post about Neal Huntington's future with the Pirates over the weekend, I kept getting stuck on the idea of how much blame a front office (or a coaching staff, or the players, or anyone really) should get for a collapse like the one the Pirates have endured this season. This is not to say that no one deserves blame for this sort of thin, this is to say that this kind of thing is not at all a normal event in baseball and  so while it's easy to say, "It's happened to Hurdle two years in a row, FIRE HIM!" or "It's happened to Huntington two years in a row, FIRE HIM!" I'm not at all certain that that's the right or best way to look at things.  At the end of July, as the Pirates' play started to trail off a bit post-All Star break and some of the more skittish fans started to worry about the team collapsing, Rob Neyer looked at the chances that the team would fold up like they did in 2011 and ...

McPherson Ready to Make an Impact in the Majors

It’s been a whirlwind season for rookie Kyle McPherson. From starting the season on the minor league disabled list, to getting his arm back healthy in Double-A, then dominating in his short stay at the Triple-A level, McPherson saw the deserving jump to the Majors. The hard work that McPherson put in this challenging year has paid off. And he doesn’t plan on going anywhere. “It’s...

Pirates Place Four in GCL Top 20 Prospects

Baseball America released their top 20 prospects for the 2012 Gulf Coast League season, with the Pittsburgh Pirates placing four players in the rankings. The four players were Wyatt Mathisen, Dilson Herrera, Tyler Glasnow, and Jin-De Jhang. Scouting reports can be viewed here, and the list for non-subscribers can be seen here. Mathisen came in ranked 5th on the list. The catcher...

Morgantown Ballpark – Future Short Season Affiliate of the Pirates?

Last week the Pirates and State College did not renew their affiliation agreement for 2013.  This forced the Pirates into accepting a two year affiliation agreement with Jamestown in the New York-Penn League, a confusing misnomer considering that there are teams in Ohio, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, and Vermont, as well.  Jamestown is widely regarded as having a sub-par...

Pirates Notebook: Offense Struggles to be Consistent

The Pirates lineup continues to struggle to be consistent over their last several weeks. After belting out 18 hits in the win on Sunday, it looked as if maybe the team had found a spark to finish off the season strong. That wasn’t the case against the New York Mets on Monday at Citi Field. Not until the eighth inning were the Pirates able to plate a run off the Mets bullpen. Andrew...

Game 154: Pirates 10 Mets 6

I want you to imagine, just for one second, that on April 1st someone would've told you that by September 26th, Pedro Alvarez and Andrew McCutchen would both have 30 home runs and Garrett Jones would have 25. After you had some time to process that information, that same person would tell you that Wandy Rodriguez would have five wins as a Pittsburgh Pirate on that same date...

Pirates Notebook: Bucs Spark Hit Parade; Huntington Addresses SEALs Criticism

The Pirates offense has been struggling to hit consistently in the month of September. Pittsburgh entered game action Sunday with a five game skid, and having scored more than just one run in only one of those games. In back-to-back games against the 100-plus lost Houston Astros, the Pirates were only able to score two runs, each solo-home runs. Looking for a spark to finish the...

Pirates pummel Mets

The Pirates struck early tonight, Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones each homered, and the pitching was just good enough to give Wandy Rodriguez and the Pirates a 10-6 win over the Mets. Wandy had a very rough start to the game, giving up 3 consecutive hits to start off the 1st inning, 2 of them [...]

Final: Mets 6, Pirates 0

GAMEDAY: Pirates at Mets

Pirates (75-77) at Mets (69-83) 7:10 PM EST–Citi Field, New York Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Sports Once again, the Pirates’ schedule is giving them a great opportunity to pick up some wins against a bad team. The Mets have been awful lately; they’re coming off a sweep of the Marlins, but before that they lost 11 of 12. They’re miserable at home, too (they have fewer...

Here is a game no one will be talking about

The Pirates and Mets play again tonight, as the Pirates gun for their second straight win, which is apparently something that baseball teams are capable of doing from time to time. Jeremy Hefner is starting for the Mets. You may remember him as that guy that was on the Pirates' 40-man roster for no reason anyone could understand for two weeks this winter, then was gone. He...
