Mets fans remember this well:  A May baseball game that launched a relative no name into semi-stardom after a pinch hit home run off Phillies closer Jonathan Paplebon won a game for the Mets last season. This relative no-name, Jordany Valdespin, would go on to have an impact for the Mets in 2012 as a pinch hitter where he showed potential by his late inning heroics.  However, on that May night, he made a name for himself with one simple quote. “I’m the man right now,” Valdespin said in broken English to Mets sideline reporter Kevin Burkhardt of SNY.  Once shock jock Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason played it on their ever popular show “The Boomer and Carton Show” the next morning, Mets fans instantly fell in love. Jordany Valdespin will serve his 50-game suspension starting Monday. PHOTO COURTESY: NORM HALL/GETTY IMAGES That however is changed quickly.  Oh, the difference a year makes.  As many were waiting for Alex Rodriguez to get suspended possibly for life, Valdespin became the second biggest New York baseball player suspended.  No one outside of the Mets organization had any inkling that Valdespin was part of the Biogenesis scandal that is currently rocking the sports world.  Despite the suspension, Valdespin has been involved in a number of incidents that would make him quite the opposite of “the man right now.”  Right now, Valdespin is the second biggest “a-hole” in New York baseball behind the aforementioned A-Rod. Valdespin will serve his 50-game suspension starting Aug. 5.  The Mets major league club will not feel the pain of his absence as he was already down in AAA, but this marks the end for a guy who once looked to have a promising career.  In 2012, he ended the season with a .241 batting average and eight homeruns, almost all of which came in pinch hitting roles.  As Terry Collins’ hand was forced, Valdespin got more playing time.  However, he could never capture that same flash that he had as a pinch hitter. It was good enough to get him on the squad this year, but when things got tough for Valdespin, he started to spiral out of control.  First was his “pimped” homerun that he had against the Pirates where he stared at a ball he hit when the team was down 7-1.  He promptly got beamed the next game and the Mets did not retaliate because they knew he was wrong. Struggles followed which lead to his demotion to Las Vegas.  Valdespin, who must have been thinking he was still “the man” did not take kindly to the move and threw a temper tantrum that ended in calling his manager Collins a few choice words.  Some may have thought the end was drawing near for Valdespin after that incident, but I don’t know if anyone thought it would actually be the end.  This latest suspension will probably result in Valdespin’s departure from the Mets and it’s possible that no other team will want to take a run at him.  His personality can make him hot one moment and cold the next.  One day he’ll act like “the man” but the next day he could be “the goat.” Now that were 14 months after “The Shot Heard Round Queens and Philly,” one would like to hear what Valdespin would say to Burkhardt today.  Would he be humble?  Would he be egotistical? My guess is he would plead the fifth in an effort not to make himself seem worse than he already is. Mets Should Cut Ties With Valdespin

Talent usually warrants numerous chances, but will the New York Mets offer another to Jordany Valdespin in the wake of his 50-game suspension from the Biogenesis scandal? Considering his other baggage, which ranges from a temper tantrum directed at Terry Collins when he was optioned to Triple-A; to being suspended from winter ball; to being photographed wearing a Marlins hat; to...

Suspensions From Jordany Valdespin To Alex Rodriguez Bring Different Reactions

One by one the names were read, but only one brought an immediate response from me: Jordany Valdespin of the New York Mets. The reaction was two-fold. First laughter, because aren’t these supposed to be “performance enhancing drugs?’’ The second was this probably explains a lot about his behavior, which seemingly has been a permanent case of “Roid Rage.’’ VALDESPIN...

MMN Player of the Week: T.J. Rivera

Congratulations to T.J. Rivera of the Saint Lucie Mets for being named today’s MMN Player of the Week. When I looked at the candidates this past week in all levels of the Mets farm system, I tried to compare to other deserving winners like Las Vegas 51’s Jordany Valdespin who won last week’s MMN’s and PCL Player of the Week by putting up some gaudy numbers. JV1 was basically...

Official Statements From Valdespin and Puello On Accepting Their 50 Game Bans

Both suspended Mets players issued statements a short while ago: Cesar Puello: Today, I was notified by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball that I have been suspended for 50 games for violation of the Joint Drug Agreement. Out of respect for the Mets’ organization, my teammates, and my family, I have decided to accept this suspension and not exercise my rights under the Basic...

One Of The Strangest Years A Professional Athlete Can Have

A couple mornings ago I received a slew of text messages in rapid succession. They were all about the tweet released by FOX’s Ken Rosenthal and Jordany Valdespin’s 50-game suspension. At first, I felt bad. My dark horse in 2013 added a new chapter entitled “PEDs” into the comedic novella he’s called a career. The one I called El Dramático for his propensity to pimp long...

The Rage About Roids

He’s not juicing, he’s crying! On Monday after weeks of hype and rumors, suspensions were handed out by Major League Baseball to those individuals who were linked to Biogenesis.  Among those who were suspended was the New York Mets very own Jordany Valdespin.  This came as a shock to many as Valdespin had not been previously mentioned as part of the investigation and he’s...

Good Riddance Jordany

While everybody in the sports world is focused on Alex Rodriguez today, the Mets universe just imploded with news that not one but TWO New York Mets will be suspended by MLB for 50 games. Look, we all knew that Cesar Puello was involved. It was just a matter of time, and I still contend to this day that since the Mets knew that he was involved they didn’t feel rushed to promote...

Duda’s Rehab Moves To Triple-A Las Vegas

Lucas Duda will indeed replace Jordany Valdespin at Triple-A Las Vegas as I speculated earlier. The Mets left fielder (or first baseman) continues to rehab from a strained intercostal muscle. He is expected to either be activated from the DL on August 13th or assigned to Triple-A as Ruben Tejada was. Duda was hitting .235 with 11 home runs and 23 RBI in 226 at-bats with the Mets...

The Ultimate Nut Shot

I really had no intention of writing about this whole PED nonsense. Not even with Mets prospect Cesar Puello having been long rumored to be on the latest "list". But then the hammer comes down on the players ... Nelson Cruz ... Jhonny Peralta ... Everth Cabrera ... ... Jordany Valdespin??? Well if this doesn't explain everything, I don't know what...
