In yesterday’s post, we looked at some of the factors surrounding the upcoming free agency of St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina. In a poll at the conclusion of the article, I gave readers several voting options to specify what they think the Cardinals should do. Over 80 percent are in favor of the club trying to work out a deal into the fall. The logical follow-on question to those voters is to ask where they would draw the line in terms of dollars and years. That is the purpose of this post. Here are a few data points to consider. Molina currently makes $7 million in the fifth and final year of his contract signed with the Cardinals prior to the 2008 season. He will celebrate his 30th birthday in July. Minnesota’s Joe Mauer has the largest contract in MLB history for a catcher, eight years, $184 million. It started in 2011, his age 28 year, and pays him an even $23 million per season. Detroit’s Victor Martinez, who recently suffered a season-ending injury, signed a four-...

Yadier Molina and Walker Cooper

With some St. Louis Cardinals fans still steaming over the circumstances surrounding the painful departure of Albert Pujols, the focus of their concern has moved to next year’s major impending free agent, catcher Yadier Molina. Articles are popping up, in which the merits of trading away the catcher before he “does a Pujols” to the Gateway City are being weighed. In terms...

Lohse not bothered by trade rumors

ST. LOUIS Cardinals pitcher Kyle Lohse wasnt bothered by the recent trade rumors involving his name for one big reason: No deal can happen unless he approves it. Lohse went 14-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 30 starts last season, leading all Cardinals starters in both wins and ERA. But despite the solid season, the right-hander found his name in trade talks during the Winter Meetings last...

Player Profile #137: Chris Carpenter | SP | STL

Chris Carpenter showed a lot of grit in the playoffs en route to helping the Cardinals to another title, but what does that mean for 2012? At this point, you know what you’re getting from the soon-to-be 37-year-old — league average strikeouts with good control and good ratios thanks to his above average ground ball percentage (46.6% in 2011). It’s hard to get excited...

How Long Will Extra $210 Million Stay In The Bank?

Whether you were devastated, relieved, or somewhere in between when Albert Pujols rejected a reported $210 million, 10-year contract offer from team president, Bill Dewitt, and GM John Mozeliak, the fact remains that the departure of the St. Louis Cardinals’ long-time first basement gives the front office a lot more payroll flexibility moving forward. The Winter Warm Up Files: Spring Has Almost Sprung

Spring Training is about a month or so away for the St. Louis Cardinals, and plenty of intrigue surrounds the team as they head for Florida. Last weekend at the Winter Warm Up, much of that was discussed with Cardinal players, coaches, and members of the front office. But the fact of the matter is, much of the 2012 team promises to also have to answer questions of “living up...

Random Thoughts: Beltran Never Fully Appreciated, Desperate Moves, Dollars Trump Logic

Just want to say thanks again to Joe D. for posting on my blog as I go through some things. Going in today for a procedure. Have been in a lot of discomfort lately and hoping this will help. I will keep trying to post whenever I can. In the interim, some thoughts have been going through my mind I’d like to share with you. 1) I understand selling bricks on the walk ways surrounding...

White House Turns Red

White House Turns Red (As in Cardinal Red, folks.) Talk about a “Super Tuesday” — this week members of the 2011 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals met with President and First Lady Obama at the White House.  Notably absent were Adam Wainwright, Albert Pujols and Tony LaRussa, perhaps following Yadier Molina’s example just a couple of days earlier, as he skipped the Winter...

Q&A with amateur scouting director Kantrovitz

The turnover around the Cardinals this winter hasn't been limited to players or the coaching staff. A major change happened in the front office as well. Dan Kantrovitz, a St. Louis native and once a Cardinals farmhand, took over as the club's amateur scouting director after Jeff Luhnow departed to be the general manager of the Astros.
