Fox Sports Wisconsin:
The award-winning handlebar mustache that formerly graced the upper lip of Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford is apparently no more.
After tweeting a picture of his former facial hair laid out in its original arrangement, with the title "RIP", it appears an era of facial decoration has come to an abrupt close.
The mustachioed Axford was named the Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year in 2011, and according to the American Mustache Institute's website, Axford texted the site yesterday that he shaved the 'stache "for the good of the team." The Brewers are 18-26 this season, and Axford's streak of consecutive saves ended on May 12 at 49, good for fourth-longest in MLB history.
Axford's facial hair had earned quite the following among Brewers fans, and when news of his shaving spread across the Internet, fans reached out to Axford via Twitter -- some in outrage, some in sadness, and others in support of the post-'stache era.
Axford even received some Twitter support from Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk, who earned social media buzz after his own hair-related decision in March, when he cut his famously long, blonde locks for his charity, Hawk's Locks for Kids.
The Brewers closer even came out in March in support of proposed legislation by the American Mustache Institute to prove an annual 250 tax credit to mustachioed and bearded Americans.
"I'm just trying to help bearded and mustached fellows, like myself, try to this country a little more handsome and better-looking," Axford said at the time.
But it appears -- at least until it grows back -- that baseball has lost one of its better mustaches.
"AxFaceKilla," Axford tweeted on Thursday, "December 26, 2011 - May 23, 2012. RIP"

BEST OF MAXIM
If Brewers closer John Axford wants to repeat as winner of the American Mustache Institute’s Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year Award, he’s going to have a difficult time doing so, now that Axford has shaved off the glorious mustache that nabbed him the prestigious award in the first place.
Axford tweeted a photo of his follicle remains last night with no words...
MILWAUKEE Another day, another player heading to the disabled list for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The team announced shortly after their 7-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Friday that shortstop Cesar Izturis will be sent to the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Infielder Edwin Maysonet will return to the Brewers from Triple-A Nashville to take his place.
Zack Greinke doesn't lose it often. But when he has, the Brewers pitcher has really lost it this season.
In nine starts this season, Greinke has registered a quality start in six of his outings. But on two occasions this season, the ace has crashed and burned on the mound.
Against Chicago on April 12, Greinke lasted just 3-23 innings, allowed eight earned runs and struck out...
MILWAUKEE Next to his locker in the Brewers clubhouse last week, Milwaukee center fielder Nyjer Morgan said what many were thinking when it came to the Brewers' disappointing 18-26 start this season.
It's not early anymore, he admitted. And it's true. With May quickly coming to a close, the Brewers can no longer excuse their slow start by pointing to a calendar.
Brewers starting pitcher Marco Estrada has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining his right quad running the bases on Wednesday night against the Giants, the team announced in a statement on Thursday afternoon. Right-handed reliever Mike McClendon will be called up from Triple-A Nashville to replace him.
According to reports citing general manager Doug Melvin, Estrada...
The Milwaukee Brewers have placed shortstop Cesar Izturis on the 15-day disabled list after he pulled his left hamstring running the bases against Arizona on Friday night.
The Brewers made the move right after the 7-1 victory, recalling shortstop Edwin Maysonette from Triple-A Nashville. Maysonette was optioned to Nashville on Wednesday when Milwaukee claimed Cody Ransom off waivers...
Since getting roughed up in his second start of the season, the Milwaukee Brewers' Zack Greinke has been nearly untouchable over the last month-plus.
Rookie Wade Miley has also proved plenty formidable since transitioning to the Arizona Diamondbacks' rotation.
In what sets up as a low-scoring affair, Greinke takes the hill opposite Miley as the Brewers and Diamondbacks...
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed utility infielder Cody Ransom on waivers earlier this week. On Thursday, the Milwaukee Brewers claimed Ransom and added him to their active roster. A commonplace transaction, repeated hundreds of times throughout the baseball season. Oh, but when it comes to Cody Ransom, nothing is commonplace.
When Ransom plays in his first game for the Brewers, he...
PHOENIX -- Sure, the season is not even a third of the way over. And the bulk of the intradivision games, where the results mean more, have not been played.
Still, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson was pretty clear before Saturdays game.
We have to have a push," he said.
The D-backs' first shove followed quickly, a resilient 8-5 win over the Brewers in which they overcame...

PHOENIX (AP) -- Ryan Braun, Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart homered and Yovani Gallardo maintained his mastery of Arizona on Friday night in the Milwaukee Brewers' 7-1 victory over the Diamondbacks.
Gallardo (3-4) held the Diamondbacks to one run and five hits through 7 1-3 innings to improve to 6-0 in six career starts against Arizona. That doesn't count a victory over the...
Photo: Matt York/APWe should all know how this goes by now: The Brewers pulled out a rare victory yesterday, but still managed to bleed wins thanks to one of their starters having to go on the DL. This time, it was shortstop Cesar Izturis, who suffered a strained left hamstring and will be out at least two weeks. In his place, Edwin Maysonet was recalled from Nashville.I know a...
