Last time

The Red Sox dropped 2 of 3 against the Mariners in Seattle last August. When Lackey is the pitcher recording the only win in the series, you know it didn't go well. Beckett handed the Mariners the win in the middle game, giving up 5 runs in the first. That seems familiar. Tim Wakefield continued his struggles in his quest for 200 wins, recording the loss in the final game.

This time

Laser Show: Adrian Gonzalez, David Ortiz, and Dustin Pedroia

Adrian is heating up and he has hit Vargas and Beavan well in the past. Gonzo has a .333 and .500 average against the pair respectively, giving him good odds to continue his progress. David Ortiz is still the top offensive performer and I will leave him in this category until he performs otherwise Dustin Pedroia is riding the league best 14-game hit streak, and is looking much better at the plate. His average has climbed well over .300, right where it should be. Pitch Around: Kyle Seager

I would normally throw Ichiro in here, but he is just not what he used to be. Kyle Seager is their top offensive performer and that should raise no concern. It seems like anyone can hit Beckett, but if good pitching is contagious, Beckett won't have to worry about Seager or the rest of the offense.

Don't Fall Behind: Jason Vargas

The Sox are very lucky that they are not getting Hernandez. Unfortunately, they do get Vargas, Seattle's next best starter. Vargas will overpower and get a lot of outs via the strikeout. The Sox need to jump on him early and get to the pen.

How we see it goin' down

Boston is flying high and this is their chance to gain some ground. The Sox are going to take game 1 behind good pitching and win the second game by out-hitting the Mariners.

Josh Beckett's Defiant Attitude Proving to Be Both Greatest Strength and Greatest Weakness

BOSTON –– This is Josh Beckett. At any given moment, Beckett can be a defiant personality, a man who is rarely remorseful and barely cares about the public perception. After last Thursday's debacle, he was unapologetic about playing golf –– during an off day –– while he battled a sore lat. The lack of remorse prompted many to call for Red Sox management to immediately...

Lester pitches complete game in Red Sox victory

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester recorded a complete-game victory, losing his shutout in the ninth inning as Boston beat the Seattle Mariners 6-1 on Monday. Lester did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning, when Ichiro Suzuki broke up Lester's bid for his second career no-hitter with a comebacker that bounced off Lester's glove for...

Beckett Has A Golden Oppourtunity

For all the bad things that have been said – and deservedly so – about Josh Beckett over the course of the last two weeks, there is a simple solution for the problem on both ends. There’s a way for fans to willingly get off Beckett’s case, and there’s a way for Beckett to help those fans – the one’s he despises so much – do just that. Care to guess what it is? How...

Red Sox 5, Mariners 0

Josh Beckett redeemed himself less than a week after being booed off the mound, striking out a season-high nine as the Boston Red Sox shut out the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Tuesday and extended their winning streak to five. Beckett (3-4) scattered four hits over seven innings before being pulled as a steady rain started to fall late in the afternoon. Beckett was celebrating his 32nd...

Recap: Beckett catches winning fever

(Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) Josh Beckett celebrated his 32nd birthday with a stellar pitching performance as the Sox sweep the 2-game set, 5-0. Beckett's birthday coincided with Tim Wakefield Day at Fenway and it proved to be a good day all around, aside from the rainy weather. Beckett was in old form and silenced all the controversy leading up to today's start. Josh went...

David Ortiz Says He's 'OK to Go' After Leaving Friday's Game With Sore Left Heel

BOSTON –– David Ortiz isn't too concerned about his sore left heel. "I iced it [Friday] night, I'm OK," Ortiz said. "It's still a little sore, but I'll try [Saturday] night." A day after being pulled in the seventh inning of Friday night's victory, the Red Sox designated hitter was in Saturday's lineup, hitting third. Manager Bobby...

Red Sox Live Blog: Josh Beckett Looking for Redemption in Start Against Mariners

8 a.m. ET: After unraveling in his last start for the Red Sox (16-19), Josh Beckett caught heat for his off-the-field exploits. He'll likely aim to make amends for the atrocious start with a strong outing in the second game of the two-game series versus the Mariners (16-21). Beckett, who is 2-4 with a 5.97 ERA, has a 6-2 record with a 3.39 ERA lifetime against the Mariners as...

David Ortiz Continues to Lay Foundation for Red Sox Success

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. Two years ago at this time, Red Sox fans couldn't try and push David Ortiz out of town fast enough. This season, though, Ortiz is the one laying the foundation for the team's success...

David Ortiz, Daniel Nava Carrying Hot Bats Into Series Opener Against Rays

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. It's the Red Sox' pitching staff that's stolen headlines during the team's five-game winning streak, but the offense is doing its thing as well. David Ortiz continues to power the...

Afternoon Red Sox Delight - 5/14

After taking three-of-four from the Cleveland Indians, including the final three, the Boston Red Sox look to finish up the six-game homestand on a positive note. Tonight, they'll take on the Seattle Mariners in the first game of a brief two-game set at Historic Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television...

Last-place BoSox still in AL East race

Who are the Boston Red Sox? Are they the team that owns the longest active winning streak in the American League, that Monday throttled Seattle 6-1 behind the dominant Jon Lester, that has scored more runs than every AL club save the mighty Texas Rangers? Or the one that remains last in the American League East, with a losing record and the same win total as the lowly Mariners...

Into the weird neon green and pink beyond

The Marlins are on fire right now. The Pirates are winning games, but it's not always apparent how they're doing it. The Marlins are starting Anibal Sanchez tonight, who's averaging more than a strikeout per inning and has been generally as dominant as the Marlins hoped he'd be when they acquired him in the Josh Beckett trade oh so many years ago. The Pirates are...
