Last time

The Red Sox went into the All-Star break losing 3 out of 4 against the Yankees at Fenway. Would you like me to elaborate? I didn't think so, I'm sure you remember it.

This time

Laser Show: Adrian Gonzalez

I was beginning to think we wouldn't see the Adrian Gonzalez that we saw in against the White Sox and Jays again. Then fellow writer, Scott, shared some words of optimism. "And I'm still very much in on Gonzalez. Big stretch run coming from him."  I feel better now.
Pitch Around: Robinson Cano

Cano is almost the complete offensive threat. If he had more speed, we would be talking MVP.  He has a great average, great power, and great success in against the Red Sox in his career. His offensive numbers against the Sox have been worse this season than any other in his career. It doesn't mean he won't be a factor in the series or this season, rather he is long overdue of a big series against Boston.

Don't Fall Behind: Hiroki Kuroda

The only Yankees starter that the Red Sox have not made their bitch multiple times. Mainly due to his time in the National league. With the Red Sox offense performed in the Rangers series, the chances of them falling behind every pitcher is very good. The Sox need to jump all over every starter early to give themselves a fighting chance.

How we see it goin' down

I don't have much faith in this team. The tiny bit of optimism left is leading me to say the Red Sox will salvage 1 game in the series, but it is a tiny bit of optimism. The Red Sox will get swept by the Yankees and we will all be that much more hungry for Football.

ESPN: Red Sox won't deal Lester

ESPN's Gordon Edes reports that struggling Sox lefty Jon Lester is not available in any of Boston's trade negotiations before the deadline. Despite his disappointing performance, the Red Sox will not trade Lester, a major league source said Wednesday, further reinforcing the team's decision to push for a playoff spot in 2012. The Red Sox remain engaged on a number of...

Aaron Cook Missed a Spot by 'Three Feet', Ensuing Home Run Symbol of Rough Outing (Video)

Jarrod Saltalamacchia's glove was set up low and in. Aaron Cook's pitch sailed well high and away. Raul Ibanez drilled it 360 feet into the right-field bleachers anyway. It was just that kind of night for the Red Sox starter, who gave up six runs -- all earned -- and a pair of two-run homers in four innings. There's not much a pitcher can do when a batter wallops a pitch...

Lester Shows Promise In Sox Win Over Yanks

Jon Lester was probably have the most important start of his season against the Yankees last night.  The Sox were two games over 500 and this game seemed way more important than it actually probably was.  In Lester's last start he gave up 5 runs in the first inning, so Lester really needed to have a positive and quality start.  Lester was given an early lead by the Sox bats...

Jon Lester Alters Routine Between Starts, Has Batters Stand in During Bullpen Session

NEW YORK -- Coming off his worst outing of the season, Jon Lester elected to tweak his bullpen session. Before Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Lester tossed his scheduled bullpen with Pedro Ciriaco and Daniel Nava standing at the plate. The reason was for Lester to simulate an authentic sequence with batters, except these batters weren't swinging. "He threw the...

Red Sox Live Blog: Boston Tries to Take Series From Yankees, Get Back to .500 Mark Behind Felix Doubront

8 a.m. ET: It feels like the Red Sox (50-51) have been hovering around the .500 mark forever. On July 2 the Red Sox woke up five games over .500 and just 6 1/2 games back of the American League East lead. That represents the high water mark for the Sox in 2012, but they've also haven't been worse than six games below .500 since losing to the Indians all the way back on May...

Red Sox 'Don't Want to Move' Jon Lester, But Team Still Has Decisions to Make After Yankees Series (Video)

By any standards, but primarily the lofty ones he's already established throughout his stellar career, Jon Lester is not having a good season. This, however, has not deterred many teams looking for pitching help -- among them Pittsburgh and Atlanta -- from calling the Red Sox, inquiring about the lefty and banking that his track record will eventually set him straight. Boston...

Jon Lester's Importance Now Greater Than Ever as Red Sox on Verge of Implosion

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. The Red Sox have had their struggles as of late. Alright, that might be the understatement on the year, but seriously something needs to change. Jon Lester can relate to the team's...

Jon Lester Throwing Extended Bullpen Sessions, Preparing for Showdown with CC Sabathia, Yankees (Video)

It's safe to say that the Boston Red Sox' starting pitching hasn't lived up to expectations so far this season. But if there was ever a time to right the ship, it's now. Boston will be hosting the division-leading New York Yankees this weekend, with an expected Saturday night showdown between Jon Lester and CC Sabathia. Lester is only 5-8 with a 5.46 ERA on the season...

Jon Lester Records 1,000th Career Strikeout in Bottom of Sixth Inning Against Robinson Cano

With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning at Yankee Stadium, Robinson Cano took a called third strike, and thus that baseball might be on the plane back to Boston with Jon Lester. Cano's strikeout was the 1,000th of Lester's career. He becomes the second Red Sox lefty to record 1,000 strikeouts. Lester is now only 46 K's away from tying fellow southpaw Bruce Hurst...

Yankees Game 100 Lineup: 07/28/12

The Yankees come back after a big night at the plate and look to take the second game of the series with the Red Sox.  CC Sabathia takes the mound looking for his 11th win of the year and to further bury the Red Sox in the basement of the AL East.  Jon Lester, taking the mound for the Red Sox,  has not been himself in 2012 with a 5-8 record and a 5.46 ERA.  To make matters worse...

The Bronx and the Brink

Nothing, but nothing, would do this team more good than a strong outing from Jon Lester tonight. The game is currently in rain delay but should be under way shortly. Clicking around checking rumors, I see nothing substantial. Some teams are apparently interested in Cody Ross, but the Sox want to keep him. Matt Garza's name comes up as a potential target -- what else is new?I...

Afternoon Red Sox Delight - 7/27

Tonight, they'll take on the New York Yankees in the first game of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live...

Recap: Blah blah blah, Sox lose again

LM Otero | AP It's Make or Break Weekend™ for the Red Sox and, well, they're broken.  They couldn't muster much of a fight, losing 10-3 to the Yankees. Despite three solo home runs (off of the bats of Pedroia, Salty and Crawford) Sox batters didn't put up much of a fight against Phil Hughes, who cruised through his 7 innings.  By the end of the 9th, every batter...
