Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard homered on opposite ends of the night to give the Phillies a 3-2 win over the New York Mets.

Two home runs on opposite sides of the night prolonged the Phillies hopes for a playoff berth last night. Not much happened in between.

Jimmy Rollins, for the 43rd time in his career and 6th time this season led the game off with a home run for the Phillies. The homer gave the Phillies a lead right out of the gate, but it wasn’t quite enough. It was Rollins team leading 22nd round tripper of the year.

Cole Hamels pitched well, but as has often been the case received little run support. Hamels was attempting to set a career high in wins, but fell short of notching his 16th of the season. Hamels gave up 2 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings. He walked one batter and struck out 10.

His opposition was Mets rookie Matt Harvey who gave up one hit, the Rollins homer to start the game, in 7 baffling innings. Harvey walked 3 and struck out 7.

David Wright gave the Mets the lead with a shot to left center in the 6th.

So the night came down to the ninth inning. After striking out the first two batters, reliever Josh Edgin walked Chase Utley. The next batter was Ryan Howard, who has been mired in a slump and hasn’t hit lefties well all season. Down to his last strike, Howard launched a no-doubt-about-it 2-run homer, his 11th, to give the Phillies the 3-2 lead.

Jonathan Papelbon worked the ninth giving up a hit en route to his 36th save of the season.

More importantly, the Phillies hopes lived to see another day. The Phillies leapfrogged the fading Pittsburgh Pirates in the standings, remaining 4 out with 13 games to play.
