After the Orioles 14-inning win over the Rays late yesterday afternoon, the pressure was on for the Yankees to keep pace, lest they lose their share of first place and fall into a tight wild card race. With Phil Hughes scheduled to start in the finale against the Red Sox last night, my confidence was nowhere to be found. But Hughes proved this naysayer very wrong and pitched probably his best game of the season. The fact that he gave up no runs was great, but it paled in comparison to the fact that he gave up no home runs. His ERA is now, for only the second time this year, under 4.00. If he had pitched this game at Yankee Stadium, the place would have been saturated with cries of "Huuuuuuuuuuuuughes." There's nothing more to say now except "Keep it moving."  Phil Hughes has passed the baton, and CC Sabathia has to take it and run. The starters need to keep pitching well these final few weeks of the season. Someone who will help keep that line moving is Andy P...

Nova needs a win to boost his own confidence, as well as the Yankees as the season winds down Once again the ace in the Bronx failed to produce a quality start for the club, resulting in another loss for C.C. Sabathia, three straight, and another opportunity for the Yankees to pull ahead in the division wasted. Luckily for them though, the Orioles missed out on the same chance losing...

Alex Rodriguez Gets Caught Off Guard By Robinson Cano's Quasi-Man Hug (Video)

Robinson Cano has been known to be a jokester. It's very rare to find the Yankees second baseman without a smile on his face. During New York's three-game series at Fenway Park, the cameras caught Cano cheesing and messing around with Alex Rodriguez. The slugger surprised Rodriguez from behind in the middle of the game, giving him a quasi-man hug in the Yankees dugout. The...

Derek Jeter Has Thanked the Good Lord for Making Him a Yankee, But That's Just Because He Liked Baseball

Not all Yankees fans follow their team because of its many wins, the club's legendary history or, you know, the 27 world championships. Some New York fans, believe it or not, are less about the bravado of victory and more about the sentiment that goes into the game. They grew up watching the game with their grandparents, their middle name came from Babe Ruth, or the only time...

The Yankees are already looking ahead to October. After Derek Jeter came up lame after lunging for first base, Joe Girardi made the decision to remove him from the game. Jeter reinjured a left ankle bone bruise while trying to beat out a single on Wednesday night. The Yankees will need their captain if they hope to play well into October. Jeter's had a resurgence this season...

Struggling Sabathia loses third straight decision

CC Sabathia takes pride in being the unquestioned ace of the Yankees' pitching staff, but his answer was telling when asked Friday for his thoughts about injured starters Ivan Nova (shoulder) and Andy Pettitte (ankle) returning to the rotation in games Saturday and Tuesday, respectively. "Hopefully they can help us out, because I haven't been," said Sabathia...

Eduardo Nunez settles for single after ball hits umpire (Video)

New York Yankees shortstop Eduardo Nunez had to settle for a single after his hard hit down the third base line hit third base umpire Jerry Meals during Friday night's game at Yankee Stadium against the Tampa Bay Rays. It happened in the bottom of the fifth inning, and the hit by Nunez would have rolled into left field and given him a double had the ball not hit Meals and...

After graduating from high school in 1942, Jerry Coleman traveled three days by train from San Francisco to Wellsville, N.Y., to report to the New York Yankees' Class D affiliate. Still looking for Explanations

I listened to the Yankees/Orioles game last Saturday as it happened. You know, the one where Mark Teixeira grounded into a double play to end the game where he was clearly safe.   I went back and watched that 9th inning about ten times. Obviously, you only have to watch see that play once. The ball is five feet away from Mark Reynolds when Teixeira touches first.  By the time the...
