The NL East leading Washington Nationals received some bad news on Sunday as shortstop Ian Desmond was diagnosed with an oblique tear.
Desmond, a first time All-Star in 2012, is in the midst of a career year, with 17 home runs and 53 RBI’s in just 89 games this season. In his previous four big league seasons, Desmond failed to top more that 10 home runs.
According to a report in the Washington Post, the Nationals believe that the injury will cause Desmond to miss between 2-4 weeks. The team hoped that the 26 year old Sarasota, Florida native would be able to avoid a DL stint. However, an MRI on his oblique revealed an actual tear that will force Desmond to be placed on the disabled list.
