There was some huge, bad news after a nice series win for the Washington Nationals, as Ian Desmond is headed to the 15-day disabled list. Desmond had been nursing an oblique injury, but after an MRI, it became apparent that Desmond had a tear in his oblique, according to manager Davey Johnson in his post-game press conference.

With the loss of Desmond, Danny Espinosa will take over at shortstop while Steve Lombardozzi will be the every day second baseman. Davey told Lombardozzi that he could "throw away that outfield glove, put it in the back of your locker." Davey also said that Mark DeRosa's role will be changing.

When asked about the call up, he said "I'm thinking Corey Brown if he's healthy." Brown provides a power left-handed bat to the offense. He's hitting .300 with a .944 OPS and an astounding 21 home runs with Triple-A Syracuse this year. Many, including me, have been looking for an excuse to call up Brown in recent weeks, and now the Nats can. Unfortunately, it's for a terrible reason.

Desmond's probably one of the toughest losses for the Nationals this season, as he had been the catalyst for the offense all year. DeRosa missed about six weeks with an oblique injury earlier in the season, and the Nats certainly hope that Desmond won't be gone for nearly that long.

Luckily for the Nats, they should be getting a mostly healthy Jayson Werth back in the next couple weeks, which will help in some ways. It doesn't seem like there's any replacing Desmond's bat this season, but they will try to do everything they can to keep winning in the mean time.
