Kennedy went from top Yankee prospect to bust in just 2 years. (NY Daily News)
The Yankees were looking to acquire Curtis Granderson. They knew they would have to trade top prospect Austin Jackson, but that wouldn’t be enough. So they were willing to trade Ian Kennedy, a former 1st round pick who had missed nearly the entire 2009 season with an aneurysm and bombed when given a major league chance in 2008. It was this simple: they didn’t need him. They had a solid rotations and some nice pitching prospects in the minors, and they didn’t think that there was any point of holding on to Kennedy when he could help net them a player with the talent of Granderson. So they traded Jackson along with lefty reliever Phil Coke to the Tigers and Kennedy to the Diamondbacks as they got Granderson as part of a 3-team trade. This season, Granderson has been incredible. But so has the player the Yankees the Yankees didn’t care about trading for Granderson, Ian Kennedy.
