After leaving tonight’s game with an apparent strained right oblique, Terry Collins told reporters that he expects Ike Davis to miss the remainder of the season. Davis injured himself while swinging on a sacrifice fly in the third inning. He grimaced as he clutched his side, and was replaced by Lucas Duda. Oblique injuries usually take about a month or longer to heal so Collins realized Davis was likely done for the season once it was confirmed this was an oblique strain. The timing couldn’t have been worse for Davis who was still trying to establish himself as a keeper while the Mets now look toward 2014. Once again, the month of September has become open tryouts for next Spring Training for the Mets. And one of the key decisions the team needs to make is at first base. The rest of this month was supposed to be Ike’s opportunity to prove he should be the first baseman going forward.
