It was officially announced that Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford will have season-ending Tommy John surgery this Thursday. After discussing the idea with management, all were in agreement that now is the best time. After having such a terrible season last year, respect must be given to Crawford for attempting to play this season so he can prove to everyone that the talent is still there.

Before the season started, it was already known that Crawford would need to have surgery, but he wanted to prove his worth and potentially help the team make a playoff push. If Crawford would have gotten surgery earlier and missed this entire season, the distinct memory in everyone’s mind would be the struggles from last season.

In a season where fans can feel let down by the Red Sox players, Crawford has changed his image drastically. The Fenway fans were tough on him when he returned from the disabled list, but silenced the critics by his play on the field. By fighting though pain and injury so that he can prove that he can live up to his contract, Crawford has done what’s necessary to earn back everyone’s respect.

It is doubtful that Crawford would be asking to have the surgery now, if the Red Sox were in prime position to make the playoffs this season. Instead, the team is all but out of playoff contention and Crawford has put up solid numbers during his time on the field. Continuing to play this season would have almost no purpose, so Crawford has decided to get the surgery now, giving the opportunity for an early return next season.

The timetable for recovery from Tommy John surgery is usually six to nine months, so he will again likely miss the beginning of next season. Hopefully, Crawford can return and play at an even higher level next season and help the Red Sox make a playoff push in 2013.
