Found July 05, 2014 on The Outside Corner:
This past offseason, the Oakland A’s were in a familiar spot. Even amongst their fantastic run of consecutive AL West Division titles and 190 wins over the past two seasons, they still fell to the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS both years, with Justin Verlander landing the death blow in both series. So as the A’s saw their roster take shape, they knew as well as anyone that even with such fantastic success, the window could close at any time. So the A’s made a flurry of moves in the offseason to bolster their bullpen and rotation, leading many to believe that they were going all in for 2014. On Friday, they made a trade that all but confirmed those beliefs. Oakland acquired two of the biggest names on the trading block, as Chicago Cubs starting pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel are heading to the Bay Area in exchange for Oakland’s #1 prospect in shortstop Addison Russell. In addition, Oakland sent 2013 1st-round draft pick Billy McKinney, starter Dan Straily and a player to be n...

Oakland A’s Fans Give Up On Trying To Spell Jeff Samardzija’s Name (Photo)

And now, a group of Oakland A’s fans you won’t find at the Scripps National Spelling Bee anytime soon. During Jeff Samardzija’s first start with the Athletics on Sunday after being acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, a group of fans made a sign that exemplified the difficulty of spelling the pitcher’s surname. After several attempts, the fans just settled with calling...

Jeff Samardzija Loses Spot on NL All-Star Team After Trade To Oakland

NEW YORK — The trade that put Jeff Samardzija on a postseason contender cost him a chance to pitch in his first All-Star game. A day after Samardzija was dealt from the Chicago Cubs to the Oakland Athletics, a big league-high six A’s were picked Sunday for the game at Target Field in Minnesota on July 15. That doesn’t include Samardzija, who was selected as a National League...

A’s option Tommy Milone to Triple-A, make room for Jeff Samardzija on roster

In order to make room for Jeff Samardzija on the active roster the Oakland A’s have sent Tommy Milone to Triple-A. Milone has been a pleasant surprise for the A’s this season. During 16 starts he has a 6-3 record with a 3.55 ERA. While Milone has been sent down it hardly means he is permanently out of the rotation. In fact the A’s will still have to make another move just...

MLB claims Jeff Samardzija ‘ineligible’ to pitch in MLB All-Star Game (ASG); Samardzija keeps his first All-Star Game berth

Which would mean more to a Major League Baseball starting pitcher: the possibility of pitching in the pitcher’s first All-Star Game or the possibility of pitching for a contender? Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija would have preferred both of the before-mentioned scenarios but...

Reflections on the Samardzija Trade

Last night, the Cubs traded Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel for Addison Russell, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily and a PTBNL. In following reactions around the Cub twitter-sphere, I was pretty surprised at how split the reactions were: fans who have bought in to what Thoyer is doing think this is on par with the Wedding at Cana, those who haven’t think the current front office is...

A lot has happened within the last 12 hours on the baseball front, particularly on the North Side of Chicago, and in the Bay Area. The long awaited fate of top Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija was finally decided late last night, sending him and fellow Cubs starter Jason Hammel to the Oakland Athletics. Frustration Boils Over

Reactions continue to come in and there are times that even I am surprised at the things that I have seen. Chicago Cub fans are so upset over the trade of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel (though more Samardzija) that I am seeing things that I can honestly say I was not expecting to see; at least not from Cub fans. I can fully understand not liking the plan that Theo Epstein and...

Analyzing the A’s-Cubs Blockbuster

You may have missed the real fireworks if you were watching stuff explode in the sky last night. The Cubs and A’s pulled off a massive, huge, franchise-defining trade that warranted a few oohs and ahhs… from me, frantically refreshing Twitter as I rode a crowded train. To Oakland: SP Jeff Samardzija SP Jason Hammel To Chicago: SS Addison Russell OF Billy McKinney SP Dan Straily...

Fantasy Waiver Wire: Week 14

Trade season kicked off this week, so pour one out for all those unfortunate single-leaguers who lost Jeff Samardzija or Addison Russell. Jason Hammel owners get no sympathy from me, since they have been playing with house money. For mixed leaguers, the change in venues  from this week’s trades didn’t really affect fantasy values much. Samardzija and Hammel move to the more...
