In an important step toward drawing the atrocious Frank McCourt ownership era to a close, about 12 bids were submitted Tuesday to purchase the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The bidding groups have drawn plenty of attention, as Mark Cuban, St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, and groups headed by Magic Johnson and Joe Torre are all taking part in the action.  While the group headed by Johnson is likely the frontrunner, the other bidders are very interesting.

Mark Cuban is interesting, because, well, he’s Mark Cuban, and envisioning his presence at MLB’s winter meetings is just too much fun.  Former Yankees (and Dodgers, Braves, and Cardinals) manager Joe Torre is interesting because of his baseball pedigree.  Perhaps the most interesting bid, however, is from Stan Kroenke.  NFL rules state that an owner may own another major league sports team (i.e MLB, NHL, NBA) if that team is in the same home market as the NFL team, or if the other league’s team is in a neutral market for the NFL.  If Kroenke was trying to buy the Mets, that would be prohibited.  However, at present, no NFL team calls Los Angeles its home market, so it’s fair game.  Also of note, the Rams could be slated to move as soon as the 2015 season, if they opt out of their stadium lease due to the condition of the facility.  Might Kroenke have it in mind to move his football franchise back to his native California, to play alongside his newly acquired baseball team?

Although it’s still early in the bidding process, this transaction will continue to pick up speed, as the deal needs to be done by April 1, so McCourt’s divorce can be finalized.  In the end, the ownership group with the highest bid will win, regardless of other factors, so it’s likely that Magic Johnson’s group has the inside track (expect lots of grousing from the internet if Mark Cuban’s bid is unsuccessful).  For Dodger fans, the light at the end of the McCourt tunnel is finally within reach.
