While the Washington Redskins continue to be scrutinized for their logo, and all the negative attention surrounding the existence of Native American sports team nicknames, Chief Wahoo continues to fly under the radar. The Indians have recently sent out a survey looking for feedback on the Chief Wahoo logo, which has essentially gone unchanged since the early 1950s. But, I mean, Chief Wahoo is so nostalgic and classic that everyone in baseball would hate to see him go. The survey which was sent out via email to anyone who had purchased tickets from the Indians website asked simple questions about the feelings about the classic logo.   The Indians have said multiple times that they are not considering any changes in the logo and they don’t foresee a change in nickname. But they are in fact interested in fan sentiment on the “issue” The “issue” is not about the popularity of whether Chief Wahoo is popular or not. Because Cleveland is plastered with Chief Wahoo everywhere. Although his popularity may be dammed, many deem him offensive. As a fan of the game, and the Indians, if a change is made, I hope they would do it out of compassion rather than survey results. But if you Google “Chief Wahoo” many opinion posts will appear of why many writers believe Chief Wahoo should go. If Chief Wahoo were to go, many clubs like the “Wahoo Women” and celebrations like “Wahoo Wednesday” will have to go, and fans won’t be happy with that. The good news for the Indians, is that most of the attention surrounding the existence of Native American themed nicknames, are mainly focused on the Redskins because that is considered a slur. Hopefully for Indians fans, Chief Wahoo remains as the logo and then in Cleveland, all would be right with the world.
