New York Mets manager Terry Collins called a players-only meeting prior to Wednesday night’s game versus the Washington Nationals and his team responded by dropping their sixth straight game and nine out of their last ten, remaining winless in the second half. With the 4-3 loss to the Nats, NY dropped to 46-45 and 5 games behind the NL Wild Card leaders:

It seems so long ago that this team was bouncing back from grueling losses and giving us fans something to cheer about.  Now, however, it seems the Mets are spiraling downward into the abyss fans have come to know as the second half.  Seriously. This. Is. Brutal.

I can go on and on about the Mets deficiencies. Brutal bullpen, lack of power, no right handed bats, etc. etc.  But the bottom line is through all those issues, this team was still fun to watch.  What happened to that fun team we were watching not to long ago? More importantly, where do they go from here?  At this pace the club will be sellers at the trade deadline. Hopefully, this is just a bad stretch that teams go through over the course of a long season.

At least the players have not given up hope.  Following tonight’s loss, Miguel Batista — who surrendered two runs over 2/3 of an inning — told reporters that he believes the club will snap out of this, saying:

“Our team is going through a bad stretch right now. But, my personal belief, is we’re way better than our numbers are. Baseball is living proof that who you might not expect might be there in October. I know a lot of people didn’t expect us to be as good as we have this year. But I believe this team is way, way better than what it’s been playing. And regardless of the fact what other people might think, October is not here yet. We’ll see at the end of the season.”

All we can hope is that tomorrows starter, R.A. Dickey, can do what he has done so many times for this club. Be a stopper.  Get the Mets back in the win column and give us fans something to be happy about.
