Ivan Nova is acknowledged for his outstanding August.   Ivan Nova (AL) & Zack Greinke (NL) named Pitchers of the Month for August. @Yankees@Dodgers — MLB Public Relations (@MLB_PR) September 4, 2013   For the month of August, Ivan Nova had a 4-0 record with a 2.08 ERA. He also had a WHIP of 1.20. He pitched seven innings of shutout baseball in San Diego early in the month and pitched seven innings of one-run baseball against the potent Detroit Tigers lineup. He gave up three runs in a start against the Angels and four in a start against the Toronto Blue Jays. He also had a difficult start against the Tampa Bay Rays, walking six but he minimized the damage by allowing just two runs. His last start of the month was against the Baltimore Orioles and he may have pitched one of the best games of the season. He pitched a complete game three-hit shutout. (Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images) Most importantly, the Yankees were 6-0 in all of Nova’s starts during August. While some of the Yankees starting pitchers have floundered or struggled during the dog days of the season, Ivan “Super” Nova has shined bright. Congratulations to Ivan Nova.

Yankees: Hughes vs. Huff

David Huff (Photo credit: MissChatter) Finally, after the New York Yankees 6-4 win over the White Sox yesterday, skipper Joe Girardi officially demoted pitcher Phil Hughes from the rotation to the bullpen. Even though Hughes gave Girardi no other choice, but to demote him, I want to be clear that he is not the only starter who has failed to live up to expectations this season. The...

Yankees game 140 lineup: 9/5/13

The Yankees welcome in the Red Sox tonight for the first of a huge four-game series. Ivan Nova, the team’s best pitcher of late, gets the start against Jake Peavy. The last time these two teams played, tempers flared when Ryan Dempster hit Alex Rodriguez in the back and manager Joe Girardi was ejected from the game. Entering play tonight, New York is 2.5 games behind the Rays for...

Girardi wants Rivera back for '14

Mariano Rivera's farewell tour has been one of the far and few highlights of the Yankees rough and tumble 2013 season but now, it sounds like manager Joe Girardi wants his Hall of Fame closer to leave his pile of swag in its wrappers and come back for one more year. Girardi will give Rivera time to settle into retirement before reaching out, he stressed Tuesday night. ...

Jeeze, Joe Girardi Just can't Let Mariano Rivera Retire

Imagine how difficult it is for a world class athlete to walk away while still at the top of their game. Imagine this player goes through a ridiculous season of pomp and circumstance at every opponent's stadium. And then, 24 games from walking into the sunset, his dopey manager screws with his head. That's exactly what Joe Girardi did yesterday when he spoke with ESPN'...

Yankees Game 138: Nunez completes the comeback

(Rich Schultz/Getty Images) Chicago White Sox 4 — New York Yankees 6   With visible joy on Eduardo Nunez standing on second, the Yankees completed a comeback 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. The battle of aces, featuring White Sox lanky lefty Chris Sale against the calm Hiroki Kuroda. With one out, Gordon Beckham got into scoring position with a double. A bobble of an infield...

Girardi, Rivera to talk retirement

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi says he'll talk to Mariano Rivera in the offseason about whether the team'closer definitely wants to retire. Girardi told ESPNNewYork.com on Tuesday that he thought Rivera could still be a very effective closer next year. Girardi said he'll advise baseball's career saves leader to take a month or two this winter to make sure...

Yankees game 139 lineup: 9/4/13

After a thrilling come from behind win last night, the Yankees go for the sweep against the White Sox! CC Sabathia gets the ball and will try to turn in a quality start. He will be opposed by Erik Johnson, who will be making his Major League debut tonight. The Yankees are currently 4-1 on their current 10-game homestand. Anything less than 8-2 would be a major disappointment, so...

Yankees closer Rivera says his mind is made up, will retire after season

“Enter Sandman” will be silenced after this season according to Mariano Rivera and no pleas from manager Joe Girardi or anyone else will change the legendary closer’s retirement plans. In an ESPN report before Tuesday’s come-from-behind Yankee win over Chicago Girardi was quoted as saying he would talk to Rivera during the offseason “and make sure (retiring) is really...

Phil Hughes Pulled From Starting Rotation

Yankees manager Joe Girardi has announced that struggling free agent starter Phil Hughes has been pulled from the rotation and will be replaced by lefty David Huff. The demotion has been a long time coming for Hughes. If Michael Pineda or David Phelps had been able to avoid injury or make their way back, Hughes would have been coming out of the bullpen quite some time ago. It has...

Well... here we are

A month ago, I didn't expected us to care about this Boston series.  A month ago, I figured the Yankees would now be bringing up Pat Venditte, the switch-pitcher, or Adonis Garcia, the aged Cuban bowling ball, and waving them in our eyes the way a huckster dangles a fake Rolex on a street corner. A month ago, after we were undressed and run out of Chicago, with taunts written...

Joe Girardi Wants To Talk Mariano Rivera Out Of Retiring

What manager in their right mind would want Mariano Rivera to retire? The answer is none, so that’s why it comes as no surprise that Yankees manager Joe Girardi wants his legendary closer to stay. “I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t do it next year, I don’t. He’s made it pretty clear that he doesn’t want to [return], but I always say, you know, January rolls...

Preview: Yankees vs White Sox (8/3/13)

With the Yanks now just 2.5 games out of the wild card, Hiroki Kuroda (11-10, 2.89 ERA) takes on Chris Sale (10-12, 2.99 ERA) in hopes of gaining more ground. Kuroda will also hope to stop the bleeding after two straight rough outings. The right hander was blasted for seven runs against the Rays on Aug. 23 and five more against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Chris Stewart wondered afterward...

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi will urge Mariano Rivera to return in 2014

After the legendary closer shutdown the Chicago White Sox in a 6-4 win Tuesday night in the Bronx, Yankees manager Joe Girardi admitted he will advise Mariano Rivera to consider returning in 2014. Throwing a1-2-3 ninth, Rivera (4-2, 2.12 ERA) has now recorded 40 saves and fanned 46 batters over 54 appearances on the hill. “I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t do it next year...

Red Sox rally past Rivera, Yanks

Stephen Drew hit a tying single off Mariano Rivera with two outs in the ninth inning, then Shane Victorino lined a go-ahead single in the 10th that sent the Boston Red Sox past the New York Yankees 9-8 in a Thursday night thriller. Down to their last strike against Rivera, the Red Sox rallied in the opener of a four-game series loaded with playoff implications. It felt like a playoff...

Larry Lucchino Hopes Red Sox, Yankees Put Ryan Dempster-Alex Rodriguez Incident in Rearview Mirror

There’s less than a month remaining in the regular season, which means that the Red Sox and Yankees are likely more concerned about stringing together wins than they are about last month’s fireworks at Fenway Park. If not, Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino is ready to engage. “If it starts up, I’m going to look for [Yankees president] Randy Levine,” Lucchino joked...
