Getty ImagesDon't look now, but Jacoby Ellsbury's 30 stolen bases have him tied for the major-league lead. The Padres' Evereth Cabrera (who, by the way, has been linked to the Florida PED clinic) also has 30 thefts this year. Last night, Ellsbury's streak of 18 consecutive steals was broken by Baltimore's Matt Wieters—but his other streak (steals in six consecutive games) is ongoing. As the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham points out, the latter streak ties him for the team record—along with Hall of Famer Tris Speaker who pulled it off for Boston in 1913. Ellsbury is on pace to swipe 80 bases—which would best his own team record of 70 (in 2009) by 10 steals. If Ellsbury's power numbers continue to lag far behind his epic 2011 season, but he still contributes in different ways (like steals), he might be amenable to a 1-year deal with the Red Sox to try again for a "contract year" performance in 2014. We shall see.
