James Loney went 2- for-4  and homered for the second day in a row to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the San Diego Padres 4-2  and complete a three-game sweep. Loney is now hitting 376/.429/.560 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 37 games. Loney, 29, is a .285/.342/.423 career hitter in the majors. Tampa Bay has now won five games in a row and seven out of their last 10. The Rays  will be off on Monday and start a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. Loney is hitting .526 against left-handers and .337  against right-handers  and has settled in nicely on most days in the lineup behind Evan Longoria. Fantasy Note:  To expect Loney to continue this kind of htting is a bit unrealistic,  but today I couldn’t take it anymore and picked him up.  Held by only 22% of ESPN fantasy league owners Loney is very much available  and to have  a regular player hitting .376 on the waiver wire just isn’t right.

Fernando Rodney Still Carrying Around Magic Plantain From World Baseball Classic (Photo)

In case you missed the last installment of “Fernando Rodney and the Magic Plantain,” the Rays reliever was carrying a plantain (which he deemed magical) throughout the World Baseball Classic, even going as far as to have banana-like fruit shipped from the Dominican Republic to San Francisco. Apparently that thing really is magical, because Rodney is still carrying around the...

Going...Going...Not Gone: Tampa Bay Rays Matt Joyce Reminds Folks of Willie Mays With This Catch

As a baseball player I imagine that having anything you do be compared to one of the all-time greats--like Willie Mays--has to be a pretty cool honor. When Tamp Bay outfielder Matt Joyce made this grab at the warning track to save what would have easily been an extra bases hit he got the love from the crowd and later had lots of folks comparing it to a catch Willie Mays once made...

Matt Joyce makes circus catch

Tampa Bay Rays OF Matt Joyce channels Willie Mays as he hauls in a catch of a Chris Denorfia drive to get a key out in a close game in the bottom of the 9th.  Watch, courtesy of MLB.com With catches like that, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ought to think about trying him out to complement Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams, I’d bet Joyce would be a solid 3rd down possession receiver...

Alf stars in Tampa Bay Rays "80's Cap Shuffle Game" at Tropicana Field (Video)

Personally, one of my favorite shows from the 1980's was "Alf". So, when Deadspin's Timothy Burke found video of someone dressed in an Alf costume performing the "80's Cap Shuffle" on the Tropicana Field video board, it needs to be shared with the world:

Rays Following Their Formula for Success Against Red Sox Despite Inauspicious Start (Video)

The Rays know who they are, and they know how they are going to win the majority of their games this season. That puts all the more pressure on them to finish Tuesday night’s game on the right note after taking the lead. Tampa might not score five runs in a game very often this year — despite James Loney‘s renaissance season at first base — so when they can scratch across...
