The Pirates have placed RHP Jason Grilli on the bereavement list. LHP Jeff Locke has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) May 20, 2012
Jason Grilli now becomes the 2nd Pirates player to have to be placed on the Bereavement list this season as he will leave the team for at least three days after the death of his wife’s grandfather.
Jeff Locke has been recalled to take his place on the 25-man roster. Locke, 24, has a 3.02 ERA in his eight starts with AAA-Indianapolis. In 47 2/3 innings, he struck out 36 and walked 10.
Locke made four starts last year for the Pirates, in which he had a 6.48 ERA over 16 2/3 innings.
An interesting tidbit: With Locke now on the active roster, every single player involved in the Nate McLouth trade is currently in the Majors with the Pirates (Nate McLouth, Charlie Morton, Gorkys Hernandez, Jeff Locke)

Pirates acquire Drew Sutton from Atlanta
#Pirates acquire infielder Drew Sutton from Atlanta organization for cash considerations and assign him to Triple-A Indianapolis.
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) May 20, 2012
The Pirates have acquired 28-year old utility infielder Drew Sutton from Atlanta for cash. With both Chase d’Arnaud and Jordy Mercer in AAA, he will probably serve as a backup unless one of those two...
The Pirates' offense is a problem without an immediate solution
The Pirates' offense is bad this year. That's an understatement: they've got 118 runs in 41 games, which is an average of less than three runs per game. They're on pace to score 466 runs. As a franchise, the Pirates have never scored fewer than 567 runs in a 162 game season. Even the brutally bad Pirates of the 1950s never dropped below the 500 run mark. So yes, the...
Andrew McCutchen blasts Bucs past Tigers
Final: Pirates 4, Tigers 3
WP: A.J. Burnett (2-2, 4.78 ERA)
LP: Drew Smyly (1-1, 2.89 ERA)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (9, 3.07 ERA)
If you hadn’t heard already, Andrew McCutchen likes facing left-handed pitchers. Going into today’s game, he was hitting .314/.390/.539 for his career against southpaws. Well, today he helped out those stats, with not one, but two 2-run home runs off the...
Correia's last stand?
Kevin Correia is taking the mound for the Pirates again this afternoon, even though it seems like everyone everywhere thinks this is a bad idea except for Clint Hurdle (and maybe Neal Huntington, who knows?). The Pirates have better options, most of Correia's starts have generally resembled ticking time bombs, and the Tigers' lineup is absolutely capable of just destroying...
Pirates 4, Tigers 3
Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of two-run homers and A.J. Burnett pitched six solid innings to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.
A day after Detroit's Justin Verlander took a no-hitter into the ninth while shutting out the Pirates, McCutchen went deep twice off Tigers rookie Drew Smyly (1-1). It was McCutchen's sixth career multihomer...
Nearly a no-no
Despite their famous streak of futility, the Pirates somehow haven’t been no-hit since Bob Gibson did it in 1971. That’s the second-longest active streak in the league, behind only the Cubs (go figure – not that it means anything). You’d think that with all the terrible lineups they’ve sent out and all the great pitchers they’ve faced, it would happen eventually. They...

Tigers Four Games Back Is There Cause For Concern Trip To Cleveland Could Change Things
The Detroit Tigers are proving money can’t buy you wins this season. The Tigers are four games back in the American League Central Division and have struggled in games they should have easily put away this season. The Tigers pitching staff have given up some close games in the late innings and the Tigers are in danger of losing the series to the Pittsburgh Pirates today. But wait...

Turn back the clock night
On April 2, 2007, Erik Bedard and Johan Santana faced off on Opening Day in the Metrodome. Both pitchers were 28 years old, with Santana coming off of his second Cy Young Award and Bedard coming off of a breakout year that would help vault him to a career year in 2007. They were among the best the American League had to offer. In 2012, the duo will meet up in PNC Park tonight and...
